The former Søllerød Municipality derives its name from the small village of Søllerød. The municipality ceased to exist on January 1, 2007 when it was merged with Birkerød Municipality and became Rudersdal Municipality. The main features of the village are its medieval church, with a very beautiful cemetery, the famous inn "Søllerød Kro", the old countryhouse "Mothsgaarden" (currently a historical museum) and a number of 18th and 19th century countryhouses. In the 18th and 19th centuries Danish and foreign artists and poets often visited the area. Hans Christian Andersen stayed there in the summer of 1864 and 1865[citation needed], and in 1868 the Norwegian composer Edward Grieg composed his masterpiece, The piano concert Opus 16, while staying at Mothsgaarden.[citation needed]
