Ancalagon the Black was the most powerful Dragon in J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy universe of Middle-earth.

Ancalagon was a winged dragon bred by the Dark Lord Morgoth toward the end of the First Age to be the most powerful dragon he ever created. Morgoth used Ancalagon to defend his fortress of Angband during the War of Wrath that pitted his forces against the Valar.

During the battle Eärendil, a Half-elven man descended from the princes of the Eldar and Edain, descended from the sky and slayed the dragon. Ancalagon's corpse crashed down upon the triple-peaked towers of Thangorodrim, destroying them. This led to the end of the battle and the fall of Morgoth.
