Chao was used as the title of the princes of Chiang Mai, Siam (now Thailand), and their families until 1932.

Chao is a concept used in Discordianism, supposedly the singular form of Chaos. The "Sacred Chao" is a symbol used in the same religion. The symbol of the Sacred Chao is like the taoist yin yang, but tilted to the side, and, instead of a black dot and a white dot, there is a pantagram representing order and the Apple of Discord to represent disorder.

Chao (singular and plural are the same) are creatures in the Sonic the Hedgehog universe by SEGA, also connected to the word Chaos in etymology.

Chao is also used as a greeting in South America.

Ciao (sometimes written "Chao") is a manga magazine published in Japan by Shogakukan.
