Welcome!

Hello JHMM13, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Skyfox box cover

JHMM13, I noticed you uploaded the Skyfox game cover. However, you didn't enter where you got it from. If you just lifted it off the Internet, we can't use it unless you get permission from the website's owner/admin. Game covers are fair use, but we can't just take scans from random places off the Internet without permission. Indicate where you got it from and if you received permission. Or you can indicate that you took the scan yourself and that you're releasing it under the GFDL or into the public domain. Thanks. Frecklefoot | Talk 19:14, Apr 21, 2005 (UTC)

Don't blank your Talk page

JHMM13, it is considered bad form to blank to contents of your Talk page. The contents should be left intact so that other users may see any issues being discussed. This prevents them from having to cover the issue again or seeing any resolutions that have been reached. When a Talk page gets too long, it can be archived, but it shoud never be deleted permanently. This doesn't apply to vandalism, of course. Peace. :-) Frecklefoot | Talk 15:25, Apr 22, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks, Captain WikiNazi. It was a mistake that I can rectify. Go hang out in some other corner of the internet. JHMM13 15:35, Apr 22, 2005 (UTC)

To anyone coming to check out who I am, please notice that April of 2005 was a quite horrible time for me, and I've changed a lot since then. Also, I was a newbie without a cause, coming from more vicious webstes looking for a fight. JHMM13 (T | C) 08:22, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing improper in your report I can see. I've blocked 82.148.97.67. Thanks for the report. --Nlu 06:29, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism warnings

It might be better to use the standard vandalism warnings -- which includes the possibilities that the person might have been an "innocent" new user still trying things out. Take a look, when you get a chance, at the {{test}} and {{test-n}} series. Thanks. --Nlu 07:15, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Vegan edits

Hi.

For the record, the article has been (over-)discussed on the talk pages and I have taken part in discussions. The discussion was taken consideration whilst attempting to knock some shape back into this topic of vegan and, no, the changes don't radically alter this article.

The main intent was to bring the article back within the Wiki guideline length and, from a journalistic point of view, remove the many duplications, poor punctuation and general flab, remembering that it is meant to be a definition of a topic within an encyclopedia rather than a discussion forum of a contentious subject. I believe that the edits bring it back to focus on the subject matter and, indeed, would like to see it even shorter.

The one contention that is likely to remain is the complete edit out of the " environmental criticism " because this is a particularly weak from an academic point of view, i.e. increased soya bean for animal consumption being used as a criticism of a vegetarian diet, the lack of equating in increased animal feed production for the proposed replacement animal husbandry and the ignorance of other environmental factors in deciding not just agricultural forms but diet and lifestyle.

Had it been a strong, honest or better constructed argument, it could have stayed in but coming from a self confessed " gun loving warrior " I am doubting that it is going to develop. If there is a negative environmental critique to be made against veganism, I would like to see it but, to be frank, the guy is shooting his cause in the foot by trying the way he did and is trying to ride roughshod over other contributors questioning it.

Yup, and I dont always sign in to edit if not at my desktop machine!

Thanks. User anon 13:14, Noc 22, 2005 (GMT)

Cool, thanks for the reference! --JHMM13 15:26, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Please read the edits and the discussion page for consensus [ or lack there of ] on the anorexic issue and dont just get sucked into this again Thanks. I will revert massive edits by IP users if they seriously change the article without leaving an edit summary that says "please see talk page for discussion." There is far too much vandalism out there for me to read through every talk page when an IP user reformats entire secions. JHMM13 (T | C) 17:08, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Dictators

I put to you that the definition of a dictator is objective - being a dictionary definition which is easily applied.

Yours,

jucifer 09:26, 26 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps, but I think Fidel Castro would disagree with you and call himself a benevolent, democratically elected leader, making the definition subjective. Also, I believe Saddam Hussein had an election once where he won with nearly 100% of the vote, which technically means he's democratically elected and the people want him. Unless you're talking about something else? JHMM13 16:45, 26 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the response. In seems to me that NPOV, means a consensual understanding the term - Castro may object, but wiki follows the mainstream line when things are uncontroversial like "the definition of the word dictator".

On the talk page for the article I collate 8 definitions from dictionaries that clearly say what defines a dictator (some add features that they often have also.)

Lack of Democratic election/abuses etc. are common features but not defining ones (note Hitler was elected). The definition which is essentially:

  • Absolute power + unrestrained by the "rule of law".

It is true that adding a name to the list could be POV, but the deletion of this article requested by 172, is predicated on the premise that "dictator" is undefinable. It is definable and is not even remotely controversial amongst historians or lexicographers - even David Irving.

Adding names can be POV, but this logic would have every article in wiki deleted since POV may always be added. Deleting the entire article would imply that no-one can be described as a dictator objectively. This conclusion is against the English language as we know it; all historical commentary therefore WP:NOR; NPOV (since this is contradicted by consensuses reached in other articles e.g. Dictator, Dictatorship.

I am all in favour of vigorous discussion about who should be on the list, and would be happy even if there were only a few names on it. All I a am passionate about here the argument that this is a subjective matter. You can see this on the deletion page with Zoe, who argued that since "dicattor" is subjective saying Hitler was one is POV - and she is right if "dictator" really is subjective it is POV. Do you see what I'm getting at old chap?

Yours, jucifer 17:16, 26 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Alright you guys have convinced me. I'll change my vote, but with a warning that you'll be spending the rest of your days reverting vandalism on the "List of Dictators" article :-). JHMM13 17:19, 26 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your intelectual honestly is sooo refreshing/unique. At least I will something to do at work :-) eh? jucifer 18:13, 26 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunantly, I am the only one really pressing it on the page, and I am going on vacation for the next few days. I aslo lack the inclination to sapm dozens of people (over 30) sucking up them them and then asking them to vote for me. He will simply spam and spam until he gets a majority so are likely to be right. The deletion will be based on User:172 willful deception about the meaning of WP:NOR. The deletion is motivated by 172 long history of being a shill for dictators. He is well aware that WP:NOR does not mean what he claims. He wants this list deleted bacause he has no interest in having to argue each case - something he would find tedious. As a result wikipedia loses info and an artilce and a good resorse is lost.

This will be a grotesque precedent for wikipedia. Is there any way of having some official position on 172 new NOR policy be expressed. This interpretation could spread.

Thankyou again,

Juicifer

Ştefan Octavian Iosif

As you can see, all the romanian personalities who have their names written with diacritics have their correct names in the article's name. Usually it exists a page with the same name but without the character Ş (which by the way, you could add it because you have a list of characters right under the edit box in Wiki) which is a redirect to the content page. --Orioane 06:54, 30 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've just created it. Here you go Stefan Octavian Iosif. I'll try to explain myself better. you can check out the page about the Romanian language. There yo'll see taht ther are some characters particular for us like â ă î ş ţ (Â Ă Î Ş Ţ). Usualy, we use english keyboards as well because the romanian ones are not that popular, and it is sometimes accepted (but not advised) that one could replace the diacritic with the simple letter (a i s t). The policy here at wikipedia concerning the romanian personalities is to be correct and create the article about him (her) with the name written with the correct ortography (with diactritics). The same thing hapes with other personalities, not only Romanians so that for the french names the accents or the letter ç are kept, etc. Because it is obvious that not everybody knows how to make the special characters usualy there exists a redirect page having the name without the special characters, and in this case i've just made it. --Orioane 07:08, 30 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. About polyphasic sleep. It is better to have some data that entirely unverified data on who slept polyphasically. If you do not want unverified stuff, delete this whole article althoughter. it is packed with myth. I just wanted to put some meat on those bones. Cheers. (Previous unsigned comment by 194.24.244.5)

Although I can't agree with your point that more unverified material won't hurt the already OR-packed article, I think I'm just going to solve this for now with an {{originalresearch}} tag. I don't know anything about the subject, so if you could verify some of those claims, it would be useful, thank you. JHMM13 (T | C) 20:32, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please reconsider your support of the expansion of the culture of Asia article and consider nominating it for deletion. There is nothing unifying about cultures as diverse as Israel, Lebanon, Pakistan, former Soviet Republics, China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Indonesia, Nepal, Japan... many of these countries have very very little movement or information flow between them... the very idea of "Asia" doesn't even make sense geographically. It's something of a "not Europe, but on the same landmass as Europe..." (Previous unsigned comment by 61.59.83.208)

Ah, yes. And don't you think it's worth saying that in the article to the unwitting English-speaker? I retain my support. In fact, you've done nothing but bolster my position. JHMM13 (T | C) 04:27, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oscar images

copied from my talk page

Hey, I just wanted to ask your opinion about something. 81.240.202.11 and Special:Contributions/NWill (the same user, I'm sure) has been making some useful additions to List of Academy Award winning movies, but this user has also added an Oscar image to many pages in a format that doesn't seem to be useful to pages such as Pulp Fiction, Kramer vs. Kramer, and L.A. Confidential. The image is set at the top of the page, is left-aligned, and is not explained, but beside that, there are categories to describe things like that. I left a note on his talk page, and he has since stopped adding the images, but he also hasn't responded, so I'm asking you for your opinion on the matter. Thanks, JHMM13 (T | C) 20:28, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This doesn't look usefl for anything at all, and seems to disrupt the pages. Buutttttttttttt......It may have some use:BUt it would require some work, and maybe this person would be up for it, I'm thinking an Oscar award winning movies sub category of oscars by year, and include something like this as part of a non-intrusive navigational type tempalte, probally best located in the same place (I'd suggest the bottom center) of the articles. xaosflux Talk/CVU 04:28, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeh, that's what I thought. So do you think I should revert all these pages, then? I will leave a message for the user involved (quoting what you say, if that's ok), and I'll guide him to categories and other such things. JHMM13 (T | C) 04:34, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think removing these images seems fine, but I wouldn't get in to an edit war about it, it will probally become apparent, as many other editors of these popular will probally remove them as well. It would be polite, but not required, to message them about removing their contributions, be careful not to remove any other contributions in between (might want to just edit it off rather then trying to revert per se). You are more then welcome to link to what I posted above, but I am in no way an authority of content; but am an outside view on these. xaosflux Talk/CVU 04:40, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the information, and I wouldn't get in an edit war about anything, I don't think I've done that in the past :-). I usually just make a revert if it seems clear, and then if it is debated, I discuss the issue. Then sometimes, like in this issue, I ask for a third opinion from a user I know to be respectable. Thanks again, and I'll drop you a line if anything strange happens. JHMM13 (T | C) 04:43, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I don't mind the edit to the test template one bit at all. I guess I work on a case by case basis with vandalism. Simpe 'hi' edits are usually tests, but when edits occur like 'ur mom smells like pancakes and booty', it smells a little more like a pest than a simple test edit. Each to their own of course. I'm aware of not biting newbies, and will keep it in mind in future. Adding a test rather than a test2 keeps it going on just that little bit longer at times. -- Longhair 23:59, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for responding. I was just making sure because I've seen a lot of admins going around recently dropping test3s on first-time vandals, and it really violates the newbie biting policy. Thanks again, JHMM13 (T | C) 03:15, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

*Ahem*

Regarding your comments at my now-withdrawn nomination... you don't know me, so with all due respect, given the scope of your comments it is rather painfully obvious that you have no clue as to what my intentions would be as an admin. I'm 38 years old, rather intelligent, and honestly cannot see where you get the "childish" false impression of me. I chose to withdraw my nomination early this time around rather than wait around to get opposed out of hand. --CJ Marsicano 06:34, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is exactly what I said:
Oppose for his response to other users' opposition. Instead of being accepting and polite, he is being childish and confrontational to the point of not conceding points of arguments by coming up with excuses for his behavior. This leads me to suspect that he might abuse admin powers to win arguments, and the suspicion of that leads me to oppose. JHMM13 (T | C) 06:22, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I never questioned your intellect or your age (although I'm not sure why being young would be an insult). The comment in question is this one:
I was p.o.'d, alright (and I had a right to be), but I wasn't as bad as many of the other participants in the protest. --CJ Marsicano 21:05, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Instead of apologizing for your actions (since you clearly realize you did something wrong), you consider yourself excused because you were p.o.'d (something you do have a right to be, but not a quality I like to see in adminstrators expressed on Wikipedia since their duties require them to pacify instead of battle. The fact that you held yourself to a standard relative only to those with whom you argued instead of by abiding by WP:CIV is childish and immature by my standards. Thanks for responding, though.
