Phase IV is an American science fiction film, made in 1974. It is the only feature length film directed by the noted title designer Saul Bass. It starred Nigel Davenport, Michael Murphy, Lynne Frederick and Helen Horton (whose voice was later to feature as that of "Mother" in Alien).

Template:Spoilers The story concerns a scientific team investigating a sudden surge of evolution among ants in the desert, apparently as a result of some cosmic event. Strange towers and perfect geometric designs have started appearing in the desert, and it begins to look as if the ants have developed a conscious intelligence.

A novel version of the story was written by Barry N. Malzberg, based on the screenplay by Mayo Simon.

In January 1989, Phase IV was featured as an episode of the movie-mocking television show Mystery Science Theater 3000 (which was a local television show in Minneapolis, Minnesota at that point).
