Tenafly, New Jersey

Tenafly is a borough located in Bergen County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 Census, the borough had a total population of 13,806.
Tenafly was incorporated as a borough on January 24, 1894 under an act of the New Jersey Legislature. It was created from portions of the now-defunct Palisades Township.
Geography
Tenafly is located at 40°55'20" North, 73°57'50" West (40.922139, -73.963772)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 13.5 km² (5.2 mi²). 11.9 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is land and 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 11.15% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 13,806 people, 4,774 households, and 3,866 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,156.3/km² (2,993.4/mi²). There are 4,897 housing units at an average density of 410.1/km² (1,061.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 76.79% White, 0.96% African American, 0.09% Native American, 19.08% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.40% from other races, and 1.67% from two or more races. 4.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,774 households out of which 43.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.6% are married couples living together, 8.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.0% are non-families. 16.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.86 and the average family size is 3.21.
In the borough the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.5 males.
The median income for a household in the borough is $90,931, and the median income for a family is $111,029. Males have a median income of $79,641 versus $50,617 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $53,170. 5.2% of the population and 3.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.7% of those under the age of 18 and 3.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
Government
Local government
Since it became a Borough, Tenafly has been governed by a Mayor and Council who are chosen through partisan elections held in November annually. The Mayor is the chief executive officer and the six Council members handle legislative functions. A full-time Administrator assists the Mayor and Council and coordinates the operations of government departments.
The Mayor is elected to a four-year term and is eligible for re-election. The Mayor presides over all meetings of the Council but may vote only in case of a tie. The Mayor has veto power, which may be overriden by a two-thirds vote of the Council.
The Council consists of six members. Two are elected at large each year for three-year terms. As the legislative body, the Council adopts ordinances and resolutions, decides on appropriations, approves appointments made by the Mayor, determines policy, and establishes the functions of the various departments of the local government. Each Council member is chairperson of one of the six standing committees.
The Mayor of Tenafly is Peter Rustin.

Federal, state and county representation
Tenafly is part of New Jersey's 37th Legislative District and is in the Fifth Congressional District.
For the 119th United States Congress, New Jersey's 5th congressional district is represented by Josh Gottheimer (D, Tenafly).[1][2] New Jersey is represented in the United States Senate by Democrats Cory Booker (Newark, term ends 2027) and Andy Kim (Moorestown, term ends 2031).[3]
For the 2024-2025 session, the 37th legislative district of the New Jersey Legislature is represented in the New Jersey Senate by Gordon M. Johnson (D, Englewood) and in the General Assembly by Shama Haider (D, Tenafly) and Ellen Park (D, Englewood Cliffs).[4] Template:NJ Governor
Bergen County is governed by a directly elected County Executive, with legislative functions performed by a Board of County Commissioners composed of seven members who are elected at-large to three-year terms in partisan elections on a staggered basis, with either two or three seats coming up for election each November; a Chairman and Vice Chairman are selected from among its seven members at a reorganization meeting held every January. As of 2025[update], the county executive is James J. Tedesco III (D, Paramus), whose four-year term of office ends December 31, 2026.[5]

Actors Tate Donovan, Rusty Hamer, Jon-Erik Hexum, Jay Huguley, Larry Williams, Jo Anderson, Mira Sorvino, Hope Davis and Ed Harris were born in Tenafly.
Other famous Tenafly residents have included actor Paul Sorvino, singers Paul Anka and Lesley Gore, baseball stars Yogi Berra and Don Mattingly,singer turned breakfast meat entrepreneur Jimmy Dean, and social activist Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
