Izium (also spelled "Izyum"), is city in eastern Ukraine, in the Kharkiv oblast' (province). Izyum is located 75 miles (120 km) southeast of Kharkiv on the Donets River. The earliest historical mention of it dates as early as 1571; it has been a city since 1639. Izyum is linked with Kharkiv and Luhansk by rail and has a railroad repair shop. Other industries include a brickworks, a brewery, and optical equipment manufacture.

This place is populated much earlier then 1571. It is mentioned as a point of rest of Kievan Rus' army during the 1223 campaign known as Battle of the Kalka River. Also this town has several ancient Scythian statues of woman, known as Skifskaya Baba. This figures are staying on the top of Kremenets Mountain, which contains lot of flint. It is supposed that flint stones were used for ancient arrow-heads.

Izium Salient was also important bridgehead during Battles of Kharkov
