Cold Stone Creamery
Cold Stone Creamery is an ice-cream parlor chain whose corporate headquarters are in the Phoenix suburb of Scottsdale. Co-founded in 1988 by Donald (not the actor) and Susan Sutherland, who sought ice cream that was neither hard-packed nor soft-serve (publicity material describe it as 'smooth and creamy super-premium ice cream'), Cold Stone Creamery opened its first store that year in Tempe, Arizona.
The business earns its name from the frozen granite stone used to mix candy or other toppings into the ice cream.
In 1995, Cold Stone Creamery opened its first franchise store, soon followed by a store in Camarillo, California, its first out-of-state. Over 1000 franchises are now in operation. The company will open its first store in Japan by September. Cold Stone Creamery ranks No.9 in ice cream sales through is 1000+ stores in 47 states. In 2004, the company reported to have $283 million in sales and the company is categorized in the $20 billion business category.
Many Cold Stone Creamery franchises have a policy where all of the employees must sing a short song when tips are added to the jar.
Ingredients
Customised ice creams are made on the spot, to the customer's request: first an ice-cream or yogurt flavor is selected, then one or more "mix-ins" are folded into the ice-cream on the chilled slab, which prevents melting. The creation is then served in a bowl or freshly-made cone.
Customers are encouraged to try one of Cold Stone's "Original Creations," a mix of ice cream flavors and mix-ins to create the "Ultimate Ice Cream Experience."

On July 1, 2005, the United States Food and Drug Administration issued a nationwide alert linking Cold Stone Creamery's Cake Batter flavor to an outbreak of Salmonella typhimurium in Minnesota, Washington, Oregon and Ohio during late May and early June 2005. Cold Stone Creamery voluntarily removed all cake batter products from its stores and promised to refund purchases of take-home products in response.
In October 2005, Cold Stone reintroduced its Cake Batter flavor after extensive reformulation. The new product did not contain the offending bacterium but retained nearly its original taste and texture.
