Patrick "Pat" Harrington (1964) is one of four members of the National Executive of the Third Way (UK).
Born in Kennington, he hit the headlines in the early 1980s, due to his National Front membership while studying for a Philosophy degree at the Polytechnic of North London. Protests ensued until he completed his degree and went on to become a leading member of the party until an internal schism. He voted for the disbandment of the National Front and joined with others to form the Third Way (UK) in 1990.
Third Way is described by Harrington as a Patriotic Centre party rooted in the culture and traditions of these islands. It advocates Direct Democracy along Swiss lines using referenda and citizens' initiatives, and is strongly influenced by Distributism and Social Credit. It supports small business and co-operative ownership, while opposing over-centralised government and promoting decision making at the lowest practical level. It recruits from all religious and ethnic communities.
Patrick Harrington currently works in the railways. He holds a teaching qualification from the University of Greenwich. He is a committed and lifelong vegetarian. He has two children and lives in Edinburgh, Scotland. His political outlook seems to have moved towards a form of socialism, although some Socialists would still debate this. Some opponents even claim that the Third Way is a populist and unusual variant of neofascism.
His published works include:
The Third Way - An Answer to Blair
The Third Way Manifesto 1997 (with Dr Aidan Rankin)
The Third Way Manifesto 2001(with Cliff Morrison)
The Third Way Manifesto 2005 (Editor)
Catholic Social Teaching (with Anthony Cooney and John Medaille)
Tolkien and Politics (with Anthony Cooney and David Kerr).
