Mata Hari was an alias of Margaretha Geertruida Zelle, who was born in Leeuwarden, Netherlands on 7 August 1876.

In 1917 she was put on trial in France, accused of spying for Germany and causing the deaths of thousands of soldiers in World War I. She was found guilty and executed by firing squad on On 15 October 1917.
