Boeing 757
The Boeing 757 is a commercial passenger airplane manufactured by the Boeing Corporation. It is chiefly found on medium-range transcontinental routes that do not merit the capacity or range of a widebody aircraft. It was designed for Eastern Airlines and British Airways to replace the Boeing 727, even though the capacity of a loaded 757 is significantly larger. It entered airline service on New Year's Day, 1983.
The 757 uses many of the same components as the widebody Boeing 767, and aircrews and maintenance personnel can quickly be cross-trained from one type to the other.
It has been manufactured in two basic variants. The 757-200 is shorter and has a longer operating range than the 757-300. The -200 has also been manufactured in freighter (757-200F) and passenger-freight combi (757-200M) versions.
The majority of 757's are found in domestic service with U.S. carriers. Some airlines, such as Icelandair, use the aircraft for transoceanic flights. The governments of Saudi Arabia and the United States of America have fitted 757's for VIP transport duties, and at least one is in use as a private aircraft (that of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen).
In late 2004, Boeing plans to stop production of the 757 in order to refocus attention on next-generation Boeing 737 models and the upcoming 7E7 program.
