Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 162 (HMM-162) is a United States Marine Corps helicopter squadron consisting of CH-46E Sea Knight transport helicopters. The squadron, known as the "Thunder Eagles", is based at Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina and is attached to Marine Aircraft Group 29 (MAG-29), 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing (2nd MAW).

HMM-263 officially stood down December 9, 2005, and is in the process of transitioning to the MV-22 Osprey. HMM-162 is expected to be re-designated VMM-162, and stand up the first week in March of 2006 as the first operational MV-22 squadron.

History

Early years

Vietnam War and the 1980's

HMM-162 operated deployed to the Republic of Vietnam in January of 1963 and operated from Danang until June 1965.

Gulf War and the 1990's

While filling the role as the Strategic reserve for Operation Desert Storm, HMM-162 participated in the Noncombatant Evacuation Operation (NEO), Operation Sharp Edge in war-torn Liberia. During this operation the "Golden Eagles" evacuated 226 American Citizens and 2,400 third-country nationals.

The Squadron also participated in Operation Provide Comfort in northen Iraq and in Operation Restore Hope in Somalia during 1993.
