Hugh Leo Carey (born April 11, 1919) was the Governor of New York between 1975 and 1983. He is a Democrat.

Carey was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1919. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He also served in the House of Representatives between 1961 and 1975. He was first elected Governor in 1974 and reelected in 1978. In 1983 he was succeded by his lieutenant governor, Mario Cuomo.
