The City University of New York (CUNY) was organized in 1961 as the umbrella institution of the municipal colleges of the City of New York. It includes:

  • Original colleges incorporated into CUNY:
    1. Brooklyn College
    2. City College
    3. Hunter College
    4. Queens College
  • Colleges formerly included in the above, now separate institutions:
    1. Baruch College (formerly the downtown campus of City College)
    2. Lehman College (formerly the Bronx campus of Hunter College)
  • Newly created institutions:
    1. John Jay College of Criminal Justice
    2. College of Staten Island
    3. York College
    4. [[Medgar Evers College
    5. New York Technical College
  • Two-year colleges:
    1. Borough of Manhattan Community College
    2. Bronx Community College--located on the original New York University Campus.
    3. Hostos Community College
    4. Kingsborough Community College
    5. LaGuardia Community College
    6. Queensborough Community College

CUNY has a graduate School as well as a medical school and a law school.
