Wikipedia:WikiProject Clans of Scotland
I have a book -- The Clans and Tartans of Scotland by Robert Bain, ISBN 0-00-4111176 -- that has color plates of about 130 tartans; for each one it gives information about the tartan and the clan, including the derivation of the name, the crest, the motto, and the history. I would like to have pictures of all the tartans in the 'pedia, along with the other info about the clans. I have no particular desire to do all (or even any) of the work on this project myself, so volunteers are welcome. But the main thing I'm looking for now is a consensus of how this should be formatted to be the most useful. (Issue: Who, if anybody, would use this info? How would they want it to be organized?)
Here's an example (with my rewrite of the info from the book):
This is the Balmoral tartan, named for Queen Victoria's castle that she bought in 1848. The name comes from the Gaelic bail (= "village") and mòral (= "majestic"). The castle is in the valley of the Dee River in Aberdeenshire about 9 miles from Ballater. Prince Albert himself designed this tartan, which is reserved for the use of the royal family.
What I'm asking for now is for input on how to organize the presentation -- once we know what we're going to do, then we can decide how to organize ourselves to do it. The pictures in the book are 5" x 3-3/8", and this 321 x 490 pixel PNG image is a tad bigger than that on my screen. I think it's too big, but it does need to show some narrow stripes. (Issue: What should be the standard size and orientation of the images? ) My inclination is to have an article titled Clans of Scotland with a simple, alphabetical list by the clan names. (Issue: Do we want to indicate on the list that some clans are subsets of others? ) (Issue: Some clans have a lot of different last names -- does that mean the list should be of surnames? Some surnames occur in more than one clan. )Then each entry on that list would be linked to a page for that clan, on which the image of the tartan would be an illustration, and the list of surnames in that clan would be a standard feature.
Please put your comments on the talk page. I'm willing to scan the images in, but not to write all the text, and I don't want to spend all the time it would take to create a bunch of picture stubs that would never become articles, so I really do want to know what the consensus of the community is. If no one else does and it needs doing, I'll moderate the discussion here, since I started it, but I haven't been here long enough to know how these things are done, so please bear with me.
