This page lists the Homunculi in the anime series Fullmetal Alchemist.

Template:Spoiler

Homunculi are living beings that are created artificially by alchemy. They are much like natural humans in their physical appearance, but they have no souls. They are by-products of failed attempts at human transmutation, usually an attempt at resurrection of a dead human. While they are called human, the materials which make up their bodies are not human and can be transmuted in part or whole by an alchemist without regard to the limitations of transmutation of human material.

Although by consuming incomplete Philosopher's Stones they can prolong their lives indefinitely and can regenerate from any injury, even death, Homunculi are not truly immortal. Their greatest weakness is that they become very vulnerable (sometimes to the point of paralysis) if they get close to a remnant of the person that was to be revived (a part of their former body). The ability of the Homunculi to regenerate is limited by the amount of stone material inside their body. A regeneration depletes stone material and a homonculus can be physically killed when all their stone material has been consumed ogr expelled from their body. The minds and perhaps other attributes of the Homunculi can be manipulated by alchemy directed through their ouroborus tattoo. They are also generally incapable of using alchemy as they have no souls, although each one of them has a supernatural ability activated by consuming the red stones. Wrath was able to use alchemy because Edward's arm and leg were bonded to his body inside the gate.

Their goal is to see a true Philosopher's Stone created, as they have been told that it would give them souls so they can be fully human. In the anime they are all being used by Dante. The Homunculi are each named after one of the seven deadly sins and have the ouroboros tattooed somewhere on their bodies.

The Fullmetal Alchemist anime ouroborus contains another symbol within the circle. The symbol, in alchemy, is the seal of solomon. While the symbol has other obvious meanings, in the context of alchemy it represents the union of the fire symbol (triangle pointing up) and the water symbol (triangle pointing down). In alchemy, the union of opposing elements is symbolic of both transmutation and the quest for the Philosopher's Stone.

Another symbol used in Fullmetal Alchemist, the winged snake on cross, is the opposite of the ouroborus. While the ouroborus represents a cycle of life, the winged snake on cross represents the fixation or suspension of the cycle in particular through alchemy.

The desire to gain a soul drives most of the Homunculi to sociopathic behavior, with them oftentimes brutally killing humans without any remorse if it furthers their progress towards obtaining the Philosopher's Stone. Despite this, the Homunculi are, in their own way, tragic victims created by the science of alchemy and the mistakes of selfish humans. Homunculi do maintain some human needs and drives, such as a childlike need for attachment to a mother figure or a desire for revenge.

In the manga, a very different theory for the creation and reason for the Homunculi are presented. Homunculi are artificial humans generated around a true Philosopher's Stone, born from alchemy and/or their creator whom they call "Father." Because the stone forms the center of their being, their resurrection always occurs around the stone, not their Ouroboros (Which has little, if anything, to do with the stone's location). Their regeneration and abilities are fueled by the souls entrapped the Stones, thus allowing them to regenerate until the stone within them is depleted, after which they die. Unlike the anime, there is no indication that Homonculi can consume incomplete Stones to replenish their depleted Stone.

The differences between the Homunculi of the anime and the Homunculi of the manga are probably the biggest contrast between the two versions. While not yet explained in detail, the method for creating the first six Homunculi in the manga is to gather the ingredients for a human around a Philosopher's Stone and transmute them together. But the Homunculi that followed were created through the introduction of an incomplete Philosopher's Stone into a live human body, as shown during the creation of (Manga) Wrath, and "reincarnation" of Greed. Also, all seven of the Homunculi in the manga share a single creator, their "Father," who has recently been revealed and bears a striking resemblance to Hohenheim Elric. He created them in the following order: Pride, Lust, Greed, Envy, Sloth, Gluttony, and finally Wrath.

In the context of the manga, it was previously thought that a Homunculus must be killed via the approprite punishment in Dante's Inferno, but this theory is proving to be less and less likely, despite the fact that two Homunculi (Lust & Greed) in the manga died in such a matter similar to that in the book.

Due to irregularities in translations, some names may have multiple spellings.

Lust

File:FMALust.png
Lust, in "Human Transmutation".

Sultry and cool-headed, Lust is the first of the full-fledged Homunculi encountered in the series. Her title is "Ultimate Lance". Her fingers (actually her fingernails/tips) are able to extend, and her fingernails or fingertips turn into razor sharp blades which can seemingly pierce through everything. She has also lashed out thin projectiles from her fingertips from time to time (which are never physically seen, but are depicted as a glimmering strand no thicker than the breadth of a strand of hair), although it is possible they are only her fingers in their traditional use. Early In the anime, she confronted Doctor Marcoh about the Elrics and their search for his notes on the Philosopher's Stone, and was impaled on a large, alchemically formed stone spike. When she was impaled, her index finger (which had been elongated at a few meters at the moment) was limp like a rope, and then sliced the stone spike in several places when it retracted, similair to garrote wire, and showing that they can slice as well as pierce, and have the potential to be flexible.

Lust claims to have first observed the Elrics while she was evaluating the potential of the alchemist Majhal to create a Philosopher's Stone. While she was always in the background, using those like Cornello or Mugear, Lust only revealed herself to the Elrics years later during the events of the 5th Laboratory, where she attempted to coerce Ed into creating a true Philosopher's Stone. Lust doesn't introduce herself or Gluttony by name to Edward until they met face to face again in Liore. Even then, she only introduces herself intending to kill Edward immediately after.

She is often directly involved in encouraging humans to seek out the Philosopher's Stone, using their desire for the stone to her advantage. Once baited, the alchemists are molded into following whatever path that best suits Lust and the other Homunculi's designs. She also tends to be more involved with the intrigue side of various conspiracies. Lust was created by Scar's brother when he attempted to use alchemy to bring his lover back from the dead, and it is speculated that during the transmutation he lost part or all of his male reproductive organs as part of the equivalent exchange. She was not the first Homunculus to bear the name of Lust, and is the third youngest Homunculus, with only Wrath and Sloth being younger.

While ruthless throughout most of the series, she changes near the end during the Liore incident as she begins to recover some memories of her life as a human, and she softens particularly towards Scar and the Elrics. However, her involvement was reckless and letting the Elrics go as they posessed the locket containing strands of hair from the woman she was originally created from, which Scar had owned prior to putting it on Al's person before his death were intolerable acts. Lust was taken to Dante, who gave her a chance to redeem herself by helping Wrath take out Edward while Sloth abucted Al. But realizing Dante's true intentions, she betrays Wrath and forms an allegiance with Edward, under the condition that he and Alphonse use the Philosopher's Stone to help achieve her goal of becoming human. These dreams do not come to pass, as Wrath immobilizes and kills her with the help of the locket after Edward dropped it and the transmuation circle meant for Sloth. At the end, Lust is left to wonder - was the true reason she so desired to become human was so that she could die?

Her tattoo was located above her breasts.

In the manga

Lust in the manga never shared the same background story as her anime counterpart, and was also the only female Homunculus. Her primary role was to gather intelligence on various situations around the country and report back to "Father". She claimed to have a widespread information network in place, and confirmed that Dr. Marcoh's original research was backed by the Homunculi. The Perfect Guide Book 2 lists her as the second Homunculus created by Father, and there is no indication of there having ever been previous or successive versions of Lust.

Eventually, she wound up in Central, dating Jean Havoc under the alias Solaris in order to get inside information on Roy Mustang, the Elric Brothers, and other projects. She was the first to respond when members of the Military found the door to the Homunculi's lair, and fought Havoc, Hawkeye, Barry the Chopper and Alphonse, proving her strength. She ultimately met her death by the flames of Roy Mustang, who continually created bombs around her until her stone's powers were used up. After their battle with Lust Mustang suffered severe wounds, Jean Havoc was paralyzed below the waist, and Barry the Chopper ultimately died as a result of his inability to protect himself in the aftermath.

Interestingly Lust's body simply disintegrated into the wind, leaving no trace of her existence. Even the Philosopher's Stone shattered and dissolved, suggesting that a Homunculus's body is held together only by the power of the stone.

Gluttony

File:FMAGluttony.png
Gluttony, in "Death".

He is one of the older Homunculi. In the anime, he is old enough to have been familiar to Greed but young enough that he doesn't recognize Hohenheim. He has the total mentality of a child and has a very dependent nature. True to his name, he is always eager to eat anything, or anyone, living or dead. In the anime version, he is physically very strong, with agility disproportionate to his size. The muscles in his jaws are also very powerful and his saliva is acidic, dissolving even the toughest metals to feed his ravenous appetite. He emotionally latches onto Lust and takes direction from her. Little is known of his past, though Dante said that Gluttony was created solely to make a Philosopher's Stone from those he consumed. After Lust dies, Gluttony is traumatized, and tired of hearing him cry over the fallen Lust, Dante transmutes Gluttony to a mindless monster, devoted only to his boundless appetite, making eating Al and the perfection of the Philosopher's Stone in his stomach that much simpler. But Gluttony fell victim to Al's alchemy, and his lower jaw dissolved. In the series he was last seen trying to devour his master as she made a last-ditch effort to destroy her crazed creation, but Fullmetal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shambala shows he survived Dante's alchemy and had lived in the underground city ever since. For unexplained reasons he underwent a massive physical transformation while living underground, becoming a hideous beast with huge jaws and many tendrils/heads sprouting from his back. Apparently, this form may had resulted from Dante's alchemy affecting the Redstones in Gluttony's body. Gluttony tried to eat Wrath when he and Al entered the city to open a physical Gate to the other world, but was eventually destroyed when Wrath sacrificed himself and the behemoth to open the portal.

Gluttony's Ouroburos tattoo was located on his tongue.

In the manga

In the manga version, Gluttony's character is mostly the same. He falls into a slump after Lust's death, like in the anime. Eventually, Gluttony gets captured by Ling Yao and Edward. When he learns Lust's killer Roy Mustang is there as well he goes into a fit of rage revealing his true form, where he appears to be split in two down the middle with claw-like ribs sprouting from his sides. Between the ribs and in the middle of his body is a giant eye, much like the one inside the Gate.

File:Gluttony Unleashed.png
Gluttony's true form, from Fullmetal Alchemist #49.

He is able to devour anything on a larger scale, with his rib-like teeth being able to extend huge amounts of distance, dragging whatever's caught back to his cavernous maw. While this appears as a massive blast of energy, it's simply fast movement on his part. Any material consumed in this manner is instantly placed, as whole, into a large void-like area that Envy reveals as a fake Gate to the Doors of Truth. Inside it, biological materials seem to break down at an accelerated pace, and the blood-like floor saps people of their energy. However, large solid structures are seemingly well preserved. Even Roy Mustang's flame attack was still active inside Gluttony's void.

Gluttony calmed down a bit when Envy arrived on the scene, having been instucted by Wrath to retrieve him from the Elrics and Ling Yao. A short while later Gluttony accidentally swallows Edward, Envy, and Ling after Envy instructed him to swallow just Ling (Edward was deemed too important a "sacrifice", but since Envy got sliced in half and absorbed as well, it seems the process of absorption cannot be reversed once Gluttony starts it). Gluttony, not knowing what to do, considers going back to his "Father" and Alphonse asks that he take him with him. It is later revealed that the place inside his stomach is actually a fake representation of the Gate that the Father created. Ed managed to escape this false gate, transmuting himself, Ling and Envy through the real Doors of Truth, and they burst from Gluttony's stomach in the presence of "Father" and Alphonse. The continuing series of battles with Scar, Ling and the military have left him in bad shape howerver, as the powers of his stone have become so weak he is unable to even regenerate himself. The Perfect Guide Book 2 lists him as the sixth Homunculi created by Father.

Envy

File:FMAEnvy.png
Envy, in "Human Transmutation," seen in his preferred form.

An effeminate figure with a dry wit, Envy has the ability to assume the form of any person and copy their voice. He also displays high agility, feats of superhuman strength when enraged, and the power to manipulate his body to form weapons. Envy claims that he has forgotten what he originally looked like (a teenage Hohenheim in the anime), but in truth chose not to revert to his that form out of hatred for his "father," whom he resembled. As the oldest surviving Homunculus, he is most comfortable in the "adorable" form of a young androgynous male. Envy's most valued contribution(s) to Dante and the others' cause is impersonation, gathering information unnoticed, and using his abilty to change form to carry out efficient assassinations. Envy's favored technique for murdering humans is to impersonate someone the target cares deeply for, and use their natural hesitation as the opportunity needed to kill them. In this way he was able to kill Maes Hughes before he could reveal the identity of Juliet Douglas to Mustang and the Elrics. He hates all humankind and follows Dante mostly for the opportunity of killing more people. Envy, unlike the other Homunculi, does not care about the Philsopher's Stone... or becoming human. His longtime grudge against Greed made Envy a key figure in his imprisonment within the 5th Laboratory.

File:FMAEnvytrueface.png
Envy's original human face, from "Death".

He was created by Hohenheim in attempt to ressurect the son he and Dante had, who had died from mercury poisoning when he was eighteen years old. Envy held a great hatred toward Hohenheim for never being acknowledged as his son, and for abandoning him and Dante. As a result, he naturally also hates his younger half-brothers, Ed and Al. He succeeds in killing Ed, though Al managed to revive him with the help of the Philosopher's Stone. Upon learning Hohenheim was alive and beyond the Gate, Envy - still obsessed with the thought of killing him - is able to successfully open and make his way through the doors, during which he tranforms into Edward, his original self, then a massive serpent (a reference to both the Leviathan as the sin of envy personified and the Ouroboros tattoo all Homunculi possess) in the process. His power of transformation was rendered inert as he arrived at the other side.

During the two year gap, he was captured by the Thule Society either with or without the help of Hohenheim. Trapped in his massive serpent form, the Society intended to use Envy as a literal Ouroborus to open a physical Gate and transfer their soldiers to the other side, to "Shambala." Hohenheim is imprisoned and offered to Envy as a sacrifice; a human chew-toy to keep the "Great Snake" calm as they formulate their plans. Around the time of Conqueror of Shambala, Envy escapes, and takes shelter in an abandoned castle only to cross paths with Edward once again. In their ensuing fight, Envy is attacked on all sides by the Thule Society, who recapture him and managed to get a small regiment of soldiers to the other side for a short time. Envy's intentions toward his "father" are unclear. In the end, it is Hohenheim who took his own life using Envy as his means. But regardless Envy was able to satiate his desire for vengeance on Hohenheim at the cost of his own existence. His tattoo was located on his left thigh.

In the manga

There are no signs of any grudge between Envy and Hohenheim in the manga due to the difference in the Homunculus theory between it and the anime. Aside from being accountable for the death of Maes Hughes it is Envy who sets Maria Ross up to take the fall. Recently he took Doctor Tim Marcoh captive to meet someone for some goals unknown, before being told to intervene when Gluttony assumed his monsterous form Like the anime, the body Envy spends most of his time in is not his real body. Having been mistakenly swallowed by Gluttony along with Edward and Ling, Envy gleefully reminiscences on perhaps his most cherished accomplishment: it was he that fired the shot that began the Ishbalan war, ending the life of a child and starting the chain of events leading to the destruction of Ishbal and the genocide of its inhabitants, the rise of Scar and his path of vengeance, and the death of Winry's parents. And being that Envy deems there to be no escape and their only future to be death, he also decides to show them something good.

File:Envy's True Form.jpg
Envy reveals to Edward Elric his true form, from Fullmetal Alchemist #51.

It was then that Envy's genuine form, an enormous, demonic creature, was revealed. This form, with its dog-like head and mulitple limbs, is vaguely reminiscent of a Basilisk. His build suggests him to be a vast heaving conglomeration of merged souls - the long-dead citizens of Xerxes, thus revealing that the Philosopher's Stone in Envy's body was the result of an entire city dying in one night. The faces of these souls undulating on Envy's body move and act independently of one another, either screaming out in pain, hopelessly twisted and homicidal, or desperately longing for death. They continually mutate and rearrange themselves, constantly trying to reach the 'surface' where they can be heard. Ling was semi-aware of the size of Envy's true form, knowing from his footsteps and landings in various battles that Envy carried extra weight, but was unaware of the totality of his size. While powerful, Envy is very self-conscious of his true monstrous form, easily baited earlier by Greed and then demanding Edward and Ling to not look at him, even as he moves in for the kill. The various voices that sound from a myriad of mouths work as a method of distraction, trying to tune into specific voices and keywords to stun his opponents while he attacks.

He used this tactic to take advantage of Edward's despair and devours him whole. Within his gullet, Edward catches a glimpse of the Philosopher's Stone held inside Envy's body and hits upon an idea. Imploring the homunculus for assistance and a brief pause in their current battle, the two strike a deal - Envy agrees to lend the energy from his Stone to Edward, which was used to break down their bodies and reform them on the other side of the Doors of Truth, letting them escape into the real world once again. Despite the drain of souls from Envy's Stone, he survived the escape. The Perfect Guide Book 2 lists him as the fourth Homunculi created by Father.

Sloth

File:FMASloth.png
Sloth, in "Homunculus Seal" from the Anime.

The youngest Homunculus in the anime. She assumed the identity of Captain Juliet Douglas, a soldier who was said to have sparked the Ishbal War by killing an unarmed Ishbal child (yet mysteriously died two years before the war had started). Through manipulation and plotting with Pride she became his secretary, serving as his emissary/executive assistant. Sloth is hydrokinetic and is watery in composition (as all homunculi powers match up with the laws of alchemy one can only assume that Sloth can control the color and pressure of her body or can perform some form of self-transmutation that converts her aqueous body into flesh and blood). This allows her her to travel rapidly through water, and use water based techniques such as drowning her victims with her limbs and making a spinning waterspout to attack. She was created by the Elric brothers when they tried to resurrect their mother Trisha Elric and was thus the first of the homunculi encountered in the series, albeit in an unrecognizable form. For this reason she looks exactly like her. Sloth is haunted by the memories of her "life" as Trisha, and believes that killing the Elric brothers should stop the pain.

She acts like a mother to Wrath and takes care of him. However, Wrath unknowingly plays a part in her death as he absorbs her (along with Trisha's bones he absorbed earlier), leaving her vulnerable to being turned into ethanol by Ed, causing her to evaporate into the atmosphere. The attack was probably fatal because shortly before this Sloth had expelled all her red stone material during Ed's attempt to seal her with a transmutation circle. However, Envy merely states that he "doesn't expect [that he'll] be seeing her again".

Sloth bore the tattoo of Ouroboros above her left breast.

In the manga

File:Manga Sloth.png
Sloth from Ch. 32 "The Serpent That Devours Its own Tail".

The manga Sloth is an entirely different (male) character. His only appearance in the manga is of him digging a gigantic hole somewhere. His body is huge and muscled from all the labor he does. Apparently he uses his hands to dig for his work, causing them to constantly bleed. He is chained up and forced to work. His Ouroborus tattoo is located on the back of his right shoulder area.

Nothing else is known about Sloth except that Greed once called him dim-witted, and from the context, appears to have been unaware of Sloth's imprisonment. Lust also called him lazy, and taking those into account, suggests that he's chained up for not following orders in a timely manner or even understanding them. Given the nature of Greed's response, it's reasonable to assume Sloth is somewhere in Central.

The Perfect Guide Book 2 lists him as the fifth Homunculus created by Father.

Greed

File:FMAGreed.png
Greed, in "The Theory of Avarice".

A slick character, a ladies' man and all-around arrogant fellow, Greed is the ancient Homunculus known as the "Ultimate Shield". He is able to make himself impervious to harm by rearranging the bonds between the carbon atoms in his body and changing his skin into an unnamed carbon-based substance (presumably black diamond or carbon steel), which gives him the appearance of a black-skinned monster. Interestingly, when in this form he does not move his mouth when he speaks, but does when he laughs. Unlike the other Homunculi (except Envy), Greed has no interest in the Philosopher's Stone, and is more interested in money, women, and power (hence his name). Furthermore, Greed does not appear to have the sociopathic tendencies that most of the other Homunculi carry throughout (at least most of) the series, nor does he view humans as foolish beings he should manipulate; he ascertained many human allies throughout the series and in fact formed caring friendships with them. Greed is the second oldest of the Homunculi at the time of the story, younger than Envy.

Greed was created by Dante, based off one of the many lovers the alchemist had taken over the years. Greed and Envy became bitter rivals - probably due to their connections to Dante - and Envy took great pleasure in tormenting him at any given opportunity. At some point in Greed's past, he disobeyed and betrayed Dante and the other Homunculi. Greed was sealed away in the 5th Laboratory by Envy. The seal that imprisoned Greed was stabilized by the skull of the man Greed himself was created from. But when that skull was jarred loose by the explosion caused by Barry's escape from Al and Scar, the seal was broken and Greed was set free. Greed took this chance to liberate and recruit the beastmen Chimeras that were imprisoned with him; they became his allies for the inevitable confrontation with the other homunculi. He promised the half-human creatures sanctuary and revenge on the State Military for what they had done to them. Zolf J. Kimblee and Shou Tucker were in Greed's inner circle as well. He and his followers established their headquarters in the Devil's Nest Bar in the Dublith area, close to where Dante lived.

Greed attempted to recruit Wrath as an ally, but failed. He then abducted Al so he could gain more knowledge on soul transmutation. He claimed he wanted to be immortal so that he could enjoy the fruits of his avarice, but it's possible that Greed was seeking a way to rid himself of what he saw as his one weakness (his body) so that he could not be sealed again. It's also possible that Greed may have been interested in soul attachment for use as a way to become human, which might be a subconscious urge common to all homunculi. The abduction occurred in front of Dante, who was held at knifepoint by Greed's followers, who probably did not know who she was. Greed continued to operate out of the Devil's Nest until Kimblee betrayed his trust and handed over the skull previously used to imprison him to the State Military. With two of his closest friends (Roa and Dorchette) killed by Lust and Gluttony during his escape, and seeing his chances for freedom slipping away, Greed decided to wager all he had left and confront Dante. It is not clear if Greed originally intended to fight Dante or to beg her forgiveness. However Greed seems to realize that one of them will not live through the night. Dante, however, had made it appear that Lyra had killed her, stunning Greed long enough for Dante to activate a Flamel array to seal Greed away for good. Dante was in possession of Greed's remains besides the skull, which weakened him. Greed somehow gathered the strength to escape but he had all ready vomited out all the incomplete Philosopher's Stones inside his body, further weakening him for the ensuing fight with Edward.

Knowing that he would only be captured and sealed once more, Greed chose to die fighting Edward. As such, Greed deliberately does not tell Ed that he has let Al go, or that he had nothing to do with the "death" of Dante. Ed stabs him through the heart after transmuting away his shield, assuming Greed would be impervious. Dying, Greed reveals to Ed the true weaknesses of his Homunculi brethren and encourages Ed to defeat after the others. The fact that Greed was much more human than the other Homunculi made it difficult for Ed to accept his death, but Greed's advice and the lessons he had learned in Dublith would eventually prepare Ed for the battles with Sloth and Envy. Greed's Ouroburos crest was on his left hand.

Greed's position in reference to Dante remains unknown. After his escape from the 5th Laboratory, he resided very close to where he knew she lived. He made no attempt on her life, even when his followers attacked inside her house to capture Al. While dying, he said nothing of Dante to Ed and seemed to be only interested in revenge against the Homunculi, yet he continued to refer to Dante as "the bitch" or "hag." This conscious choice may suggest that part of Greed's human side still had some sway over his emotions towards "his" former lover.

In the manga

The Greed in the manga was never sealed inside the 5th Laboratory, but hung out at the Devil's Nest with his loyal chimera allies. We are never told just how long he's been here, or if he has much contact with the outside world at all, but the Perfect Guide Book 2 tells us he left Father's group and the other Homunculi 100 years before Alphonse was born, or roughly 114 years before he meets the Elric Brothers.

He taught Alphonse a few of the secrets of the Homunculi, such as regeneration. While he briefly fought with Izumi, she ended up leaving of her own accord to inform Ed of the situation. Similar to the anime, he did battle with Edward but escaped into the sewers, only to be captured and skewered multiple times by King Bradley, the manga's Wrath, after dying fifteen times or so. Greed appears to have been unconscious when Marta was killed inside Alphonse.

Greed was shackled in chains and taken to the Homunculi’s hideout, where Father offered him a chance to align himself to their cause once again. But Greed refused, as his avarice would never be satisfied so long as he stayed by Father's side. As a result Greed was boiled alive in oil, with the Philosopher's Stone within him extracted and drank by Father. He's obstinate and defiant to the end, cackling at how the temperature's just right and how he'll be waiting for Father and the other Homunculi in Hell. It is noteworthy to mention the symbolism of Greed's "death" is a sort of homage to the punishment of humans according to Dante's Inferno.

His favorite phrase was "There's no such thing as no such thing." It was revealed just prior to his oil bath that he knew of every other homunculi except for Wrath, who was created after he left the group. Suspiciously, he does not mention or ask about Pride. The Perfect Guide Book 2 lists him as the third Homunculi created by Father.

Later in the manga a second Greed was created. The Homunculi's Father allowed Greed's Philosopher’s Stone to run into the bloodstream of the Xingian prince Ling Yao, creating a homunculus with a method similar to that of Wrath's. Ling accepted this, longing to obtain power. This Greed, while he has the same powers as the original and his ouroboros is in the same location, is not the same as the previous Greed and has no memories of that incarnation. While Greed claims no relation to his predecessor, while accepting the stone Ling finds himself face to face with a kind of "source" of Greed, a void where a being, calling himself and looking like the shielded form of Greed, negotiates a bonding between them. While this could be no more than a hallucination, the new Greed shares numerous traits with his predecessor including a natural aversion to following orders like Envy or Gluttony would.

Greed also has no memories of being Ling. However, it is apparent that Ling's soul is still present in that body, as Greed faltered when Ed mentioned Ran Fan.

Wrath

Wrath (anime)

File:FMAWrath.png
Wrath, in "Homunculus Seal".

In the anime he is the second youngest Homunculus. With the appearance of a Seven to eleven year-old child, he is exceptional as he possesses the ability to perform alchemy (unlike the other Homunculi), and is unique even among most alchemists in that he can transmute without a transmutation circle. He can do this because of his right arm and left leg, which originally belonged to Edward Elric. He can also fuse his body's form with other objects, whether or not the objects are organic. In one instance, Wrath accidentally fused himself to the bed on which he was lying, combining his organic form with that of the bed's wooden frame and cloth sheets. Later he was able to fuse himself with Sloth. He has the ability to stretch his Homunculus limbs to great lengths, at which time his limbs take on a blue color, and appear similar to a large mass of muscle fibers. Wrath's alchemy stems from the fact that his limbs were once part of a being with a soul who never died (i.e., Ed). However, as they are only a small part of the being, his alchemy must, like the alchemy-like powers of the other homunculi, be focused around himself. He has performed transmutations on other objects without fusing himself, such as when he mirrored Ed's trademark lance, but these transmutations are simple. More complex alchemy requires him to fuse himself with the object or fuse with the transmutation circle itself, as he did when he activated the Flamel array he used to make Lust vomit up her red stone. However, Wrath lacks the ability to create such stones for himself.

Wrath was created when Izumi Curtis attempted to transmute her dead child on Yok Island. The result was a Homunculus with its typical inhuman appearance when immature. Izumi sent it back into the Gate where Wrath remained, aging there in the process. When Edward attemped to revive his mother, Wrath took possession of his lost limbs within the gate. The limbs eventually gave Wrath the power to force open the gate and come back to Yok Island where he lived until he was discovered.

After being discovered by the Elrics on the Island, he was taken to the house of Izumi Curtis. He eventually ran away and his existence became known to Envy, the military, and Greed. Envy eventually made contact with Wrath and provided him with incomplete Philsopher's Stones. On consuming the stones, Wrath became a mature Homunculus. The stones' power and Envy's words changed his demeanor from that of an innocent child's to the total incarnation of his cardinal sin, full of raw hatred and anger--especially at his master for creating him. Wrath was encouraged by Envy to hate Edward and attempted to take his body, so that he could absorb it and become completely human (but without a soul of his own Wrath would only be as human as Pride).

Unlike the other Homunculi, Wrath was created directly from the materials of the human that was being transmuted. Because of this, Wrath did not share the weakness of the other Homunculi because the remains of the original body do not exist. But Wrath had other weaknesses: a deep and paralyzing phobia of the sound of a wailing baby and that of the gate itself. The human nature of his arm and leg were also a weakness. Although Wrath was affectionate towards Izumi at first, after meeting Envy, and typical of the other Homunculi, Wrath rejected his creator. He eventually adopted Sloth as his mother, probably as part of a delusion that he could become Edward by taking things that belonged to him.

After Sloth's death, Wrath is inconsolable, and started talking about using the Philosopher's Stone to revive her. Given that Wrath had the ability to perform Alchemy, Dante decides to summon the gate. In the final moments before the monsterous residents of the gate attack Wrath, Envy betrayed him and the fearful child finally came to understand the truth about his relations to Dante and her sins. The gate pulled in the human parts of Wrath as it had previously pulled in Edward and Hohenheim. For unclear reasons, Wrath could not replace his human limbs with non-human ones, and he emerges missing an arm and a leg. Winry eventually fitted Wrath with automail similar to Edward's.

His whereabouts for the next two years are unknown, though he did resurface to visit his creator's tomb, but appears as a shell of his former self: likely because he has no red stones to consume and accepting who he was after the events of the finale. He guided Alphonse Elric through the underground city to find and open the Gate. Gluttony, now a huge and mindless monster ravenous with hunger, attacks, attempting to devour them both. After Gluttony expels some red stone material, Wrath consumes it and regains considerable strength. Wrath is able to hold Gluttony off for a short while, and screams for Al to use both he and Gluttony as Equivalent Exchange to open the portal. Al is wary of sacrificing Wrath, but is assured by the homunculus that this was the very reason he brought Al there in the first place. Al forcefully carries out his request and transmutes the Gate, destroying both Wrath and Gluttony in the process. Upon his redemption we see a human-looking Wrath standing in front of the doors of the Gate, which open with Izumi there to greet him. Reunited at last, the two disappear into the hereafter together. Wrath's tattoo is on the sole of his right foot.

Wrath (manga)

In the manga version, Wrath is King Bradley, who revealed himself as a homonculus during his capture of Greed. He is able to pass beneath Ling Yao's servant Ran Fan's gaze unnoticed (despite her deft ability at tracking homunculi by their distinctive ki), because he has only one soul in his body. Bradley uses this opportunity to cut her down, almost severing her left arm. A skilled tracker in his own right, Wrath begins to hunt her down, only to find she's finished the job severing her arm herself and tied it to a stray dog in order to throw him off her track.

Wrath doesn't seem to enjoy the aging process; Bradley comments on how he's unable to act as rashly as he might have years ago and that his eye sometimes gives him options his body can no longer follow. Still, he accepts his fate as the culmination of his father's plans for both he and Amestris since his creation some sixty years ago (Thus making him the youngest of the Homunculi). Most recently, Wrath revealed that during Hughes' funeral, he was extremely angry at Elicia's crying. This suggests that he was holding himself back from killing the child.

Wrath also admits to having some fun at the expense of Mustang, the Elric Brothers and Ling's group. He likes having the challenge of keeping up with them, despite being more cunning and in a far higher position of power. He then speculates on whether or not they can now succeed due to the interference of the others to Pride, who sees this as treason, but does not report it. After foiling an attempt by Mustang to expose him as a homunculus, Bradley ordered an immediate transer of Mustang's subordinates, sending them to different regions throughout the country. The lone exception was Hawkeye, who is to remain in Central as his own personal assistant (and as a hostage to keep Mustang in line).

It was recently revealed that Wrath was originally a human who was transformed into a Homunculus through scientific experiments, which involved injecting a Philosopher's Stone into his body. He was the twelfth subject injected with the stone material and the only one to survive the heretofore fatal ordeal. This explains why he both ages like a normal human, and only possesses one soul as opposed to the collection of souls possessed by the older Homunculi. However, even Wrath is unsure if his soul is his own or one passed to him via the stone, though the fact Wrath still retains some of his childhood memories might mean his original soul wasn't completely destroyed (as it seems Ling/Greed has no knowledge of his previous self). The Perfect Guide Book 2 lists him as the seventh Homunculi created by Father.

Pride

Pride (anime)

Pride, as revealed in "The Scar".

In the anime, he is King Bradley, the political and military ruler of Amestris holding the official title of president, also called "Führer." Created by Dante, he controls the country and directs its military in secret to further her ends. His Ouroburos tattoo is on his left eye, which Pride covers with an eye patch. His "Ultimate Eye" gives him the foresight to see all possible outcomes of a given situation, allowing him to predict the moves of any opponent before they happen. Dante considered him her finest creation - the only Homunculus she created who could appear to age like a normal human (although Wrath, created by Izumi, apparantly also had this ability). Pride is younger than Greed and Envy while he is older than Sloth, Wrath and Lust. A comment from Greed during Fullmetal Alchemist: Reflections indicates that Pride (or a previous Pride) was the last Homunculus born prior to Greed's imprisonment, but this comment would create a discrepancy between this and his aging as a normal human. Adding to the confusion is Greed's comment about "Envy, Pride, and the others" which implies that Greed was aware of Pride's existence or unaware of a former Pride's death.

Physically aging enabled Pride to live among humans and even start a family of his own, with an adopted son named Selim (sometimes translated as Salem), whom he strangled to death when the boy inadvertantly gave Roy Mustang an advantage against him: what Selim thought to be his father's most prized possession was actually the skull of the man Pride was created from, and causes him to become immobile. With the skull in hand Roy was able to repeatedly incinerate Pride with his alchemic flames, until at length his regenerative powers were depleted and he died.

Pride (manga)

In the manga, Pride is an entirely different character yet to be revealed, as Bradley is the Homunculus known as Wrath. So far in the manga, Pride has only appeared as a disembodied voice speaking to the other Homunculi. He is apparently in control of the other Homunculi, and seems to be highly respected and feared, even if he does have the habit of showing up when he's either not needed or in a non-combatant form. In chapter 49, we see a shadow-covered Pride, confirming a humanoid form but not much else. The mouth-shaped, the only non-grey area in the picture, can match a wide variety of characters. What little we can see of Pride's outline suggests he's hiding his form for a reason, and has other duties that require absolute discretion during the current events.

Pride apparently takes all matters towards the Homunculi and their 'Father' extremely seriously. When Wrath reports to Pride about how their plans getting disrupted was fun, Pride said he would keep this a secret between them. This suggests that Pride regularly reports everything to Father, but that he also has an understanding with Wrath (As Pride is the eldest of the seven Homunculi, he may have an "Older brother" relationship with the relatively young Wrath). The Perfect Guide Book 2 lists him as the first Homunculi created by Father.
