WebP is a new image file format that uses lossy compression, it is based on VP8's intra-frame coding, and uses a RIFF container.[4]

History

It was designed by Google to reduce image file size to speed web page loading. WebP is based on VP8's intra-frame coding and uses a container based on Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF). Google announced the new image format on the Chromium blog on 30 September 2010.[1]
