Quicksilver is a free utility made by Blacktree Software for Mac OS X. It lets people use the keyboard to rapidly perform actions like launching applications, manipulating files, and sending email. It is very similar to another Mac OS X application called LaunchBar.

Pressing a configurable hotkey or combination, such as Command-Space or Control, displays the Quicksilver interface. When typing, possible objects are listed in order of previous use, with the list being filtered based on the text entered so far. For example, typing "intern" might show the Internet Connect utility, the International panel of System Preferences, the Internet Plug-ins folder, an address book card for someone who works at International Example Corp., and that company's home page from your Web browser history. Subsequent panels let you choose what to do with the selected item: for example, possible actions for a folder might include Open, Reveal, Move to... (which would open a third panel to choose the destination), and Go To Directory in Terminal.

Interfaces with other applications

Quicksilver has a plug-in architecture, with each plug-in providing integration with a program, an interface, or a new feature. Plug-ins exist for the following:

In January 2005, Imendio began work on GNOME Launch Box, an equivalent utility for GNOME.
