New England Telephone was the name of the RBOC serving Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont prior to 1994. It became part of NYNEX on January 1, 1984, when AT&T was divested of its local operating companies. After merging with Bell Atlantic, the name changed to Bell Atlantic, and after Bell Atlantic bought GTE, the name changed again, to Verizon.

It had no connection to New England Telephone and Telegraph, a short-lived company that dissolved in 1879.

History

New England Telephone, through various mergers and successor companies, has carried various names and used numerous logos.

In 1969, AT&T revamped its corporate identity, which included the modern Bell logo. In 1984, after the AT&T divestiture, New England Telephone and New York Telephone were spun off to the newly created Regional Holding Company, NYNEX Corporation. The logo is still in use today on Verizon trucks and pay phones.

In 1994, the New England Telephone and New York Telephone names ceased to exist, both became branded as simply NYNEX, and the Bell System logo was dropped from the corporate logo, however, it remained on phone booths, even on the then-new NYNEX signs.

In 1996, Bell Atlantic merged with NYNEX. The logo brings to mind its namesake ocean. The merger also restored the Bell System logo.

Since 2000, the successor company to New England Telephone has been Verizon Communications. The Bell System logo disappeared, again (except on trucks and phone booths).
