Wikipedia:Requests for investigation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Ed Poor (talk | contribs) at 17:29, 29 October 2002 (fix link). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

The purpose of this page is to provide instant notice of vandalism taking place. You can use the format under the Current Alerts heading: IP address, pages touched, damage done. If you don't want to call attention to your report, be sure to check the box marked "this is a minor edit" (so it won't show up in most users' recent changes).

For a list of currently blocked IPs and the reason why they were blocked, visit: Special:Ipblocklist.

If you would like to look up information about the vandal's IP please visit http://network-tools.com/ and enter in the IP.

However, please do not label isolated instances of text deletion s, replacements or odd additions as VANDALISM unless they are overtly lewd or offensive. More often than not, this is just a visitor to the site experimenting with how to use it -- labeling them as a VANDAL is a sure way of ensuring they will not become contributors. Only add alerts to this page of true VANDALISM such as a systematic attack on several articles. Above all, please be polite at first and give the person the benefit of the doubt until they prove they deserve otherwise.

If you disagree with someone's edits, your complaint might get more mileage at Wikipedia:Edit wars in progress.

CURRENT ALERTS

  • 65.96.161.106 - changes to US anti-Taliban articles: perhaps not really "vandalism" per se, but not really correct either. Take a look, please. --Ed Poor
  • user:Hello.jpg uploaded the notorious goatse.cx image, which I deleted before it was 'used' in any articles. --KQ

EXPIRED ALERTS

Please move items down from "current alerts" after they are no longer an issue. Like, a day or two after a drive-by.

I have reviewed all of the edits made by this IP. All but the most recent are perfectly valid and improved articles. This may be an IP of a library/school or other shared computer. We therefore may have to lift the ban soon. --mav
194.117.133.196 is a transparent proxy cache belonging to my ISP. I was being affected by the block, but I've managed to sidestep it. --rbrwr
194.117.133.196 cache-haw.cableinet.co.uk, this is a web cache for telewest blueyonder isp users, Im being affected by it as well. --User:Nosrail
  • 193.251.9.132 Is creating nonsense articles. Slap him with a clue stick.
    • He's now pasting in links to goatse.cx with misleading edit summaries ("reverting vandalism"), and deleting his name from this list - hilarious, I'm sure. Anybody fancy banning him? --Camembert
  • 146.184.0.71 adding bogus links to and deleting valid data from various articles. -- Someone else 23:06 Oct 22, 2002 (UTC)
  • 24.166.83.194: Two contributions, both deliberate vandalism of existing articles, misleading edit summaries used to attempt to cover tracks. Goatse.cx vandalism of Jehovah's Witnesses article. Note: has also edited this page to try to cover tracks.
Please fix the damage by 24.166.83.194. I've blocked that IP, so there won't be any more, but watch out for the same fool on a different IP. -- isis 17:13 Oct 24, 2002 (UTC)
Damage appears to have been reverted. The Anome 17:22 Oct 24, 2002 (UTC)
    • I just checked, and all damage by 24.166.83.194 has been reverted. --Ed Poor 17:49 Oct 24, 2002 (UTC)

Here's how it works:

When you notice what you believe to be an act of vandalism at work, take note of that person's IP number or handle.

Edit this page, adding the person's IP number, the date and the approximate time (server) of the alleged vandalism.

Then put the person's IP or handle in the Summary box and hit save. (Important!!! Otherwise people have to open the vandalism page to see what's happening.)

VANDALISM IN PROGRESS appears in caps on Recent Changes, along with the id of the alleged vandal, and the rest of Wikipedia can jump in to decide whether damage has actually occurred. If there is consensus that an attack was correctly identified, everyone will help repair the damage (see guidelines below for how to remove undesired changes).

If no attack occurred (e.g. it was just a difference of opinion about what is appropriate content or style, not intentional defacement), you should probably apologize to the person you branded as a vandal.

When the attack is finished, come back and remove the information you added. When it is removed, you may wish to add it to Vandalism in progress - old alerts for future reference.

Please only use this page for geniune malicious vandalism, and only for a sustained attack. If you make any changes to this page for other reasons, check the minor edit box, or put something like "Not calling a vandalism alert" in the Summary box.

Incorrectly considered as a vandal

    • 128.193.88.xxx is also "OsmosisTwo" person who attempted to resist the cabal the other night. baffling, not malicious. -- Tarquin 15:48 Oct 2, 2002 (UTC)
    • 128.193.88.xxx, please register a user name so you have user page where can talk to you about how you can go about helping this project. please stop editing my words (above). it's rude. -- Tarquin
    • I will not register a user name.
    • It's your choice, and regular contributors have chosen stay unregistered before. It does make it easier for everyone if people have names instead of numbers. -- Tarquin

Notes and further guidelines:

When you list times, please modify to "server" time for the international community. You can obtain the current server time from the preferences tab.

How to remove undesired changes:

  1. click "History" for the damaged page.
  2. click the date & time of a previous undamaged version to display it.
  3. click "Edit page"; there will be a warning at the top of the edit box that saving will erase changes that were made in later revisions -- that's exactly what you want!
  4. click "Save page" to save the old version as it was.

If you wish to minimise your actions, just enter the letters "VR" as a comment, and choose "minor edit". This informs the other editors (if they choose to view minor edits in their preferences) that a page has been repaired.
