Shire Calendar

The Shire Calendar was a calendar used in J.R.R. Tolkien's fictional Middle-earth by the Hobbits of The Shire. It was different from that used by the Men, Dwarves and Elves.

Year 1 of the Shire Calendar corresponds to when the Shire was founded by the Bree Hobbits Marcho and Blanco in the year 1601 of the Third Age. Last year of Third Age was year 1421 in Shire calendar.


Months of the year

The Shire calendar's year is divided into 12 months of thirty days. Five additional days are added to create three hundred and sixty-five day year. The months follow the lunar cycle.

Lithe are the days on either side of the middle of the year (Midyear's Day). Yule are the days that mark the end of an old year and the beginning of a new one. Lithe and Yule days are placed outside of the month, and have no weekday. These days are primary holidays and feast days.
