Template:MLS team Houston 1836 was supposed to be the name of a soccer club based in Houston, Texas that participates in Major League Soccer. The team was created on December 15, 2005 when the San Jose Earthquakes were relocated, due to the failure of securing a new stadium for the team. Even though all of San Jose's players, coaches, and staff moved to Houston, the team's name, logo, history, and statistics were not transferred.

MLS held an online survey for the fans to help name the new team. The options given were: Apollos, Bulls, Eagles, Gatos, Lonestars, Stallions, Toros, Americans, Buffalos, Generals, Houston 1836, Mustangs, and Stars. The "Houston 1836" name refers to the year that the city of Houston was founded by brothers Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen. Houston 1836's logo features a silhouette of General Sam Houston, perhaps the city's, and state's, most famous historical figure.

However, problems with the new "Houston 1836" name occurred immediately. An early misconception in the mainstream media was that the team was to be called "the 1836". A day before the press conference to announce the franchise identity, fans discovered the name and logo had mistakenly been uploaded on the MLS site and quickly spread the information. However, the biggest problem was that the name "1836" drew the ire of some. 1836 is the year that Texas fought for and won its independence from Mexico.

The club will play its home matches at Robertson Stadium, located on the University of Houston campus. A three-year lease has been signed to play at the stadium while plans for a soccer-specific stadium are finalized.

Club owner, Anschutz Entertainment Group, is hoping to finalize an agreement to construct a 20,000- to 25,000-seat soccer specific stadium on the site of Houston Independent School District's Delmar Stadium, located at the intersection of I-610 and U.S. 290. The company would like the school district to help share the costs of building the $65 to $80 million stadium. In the event that this plan went through, the current Delmar Stadium would be razed and replaced with the soccer-specific venue. Like the Pizza Hut Park stadium agreement in Frisco for F.C. Dallas, the stadium would be shared with the school district's high school football teams and the facility would be surrounded by community soccer fields.

Another stadium option that AEG has mentioned is discussing with the University of Houston the possibility of sharing costs on a new stadium to be located on the campus. This plan would require the construction of a practice facility in the vicinity of the campus. In any stadium agreement that passes, the Harris County Sports Authority will not contribute anything to the construction cost.
