History

The airline was established in 2002 and started operations on 12 February 2003 at Leeds Bradford International Airport. Jet2.com established a second base in Manchester in December 2004, with a secondary hub at Belfast International Airport in Northern Ireland. Plans for flights from Belfast to Cork were abandoned in February 2005 due to poor forward bookings and competition from other airlines. In 2005 Jet2.com began operating flights from Manchester to London Gatwick in competition with British Airways. On 18 May 2005, Dart Group announced that it had bought 2 Boeing 757-200 aircraft from New Mexorado Gas LLC to expand the operations of Jet2.com. Both aircraft were previously operated by Fly Air of Turkey, but had been in storage at Goodyear, Arizona, USA (ref: Air International, July 2005). In September 2005, Jet2.com launched flights from a further base at Newcastle Airport. In November 2005, Jet2.com announced a new base at Blackpool.

In early 2006 Dart Group put all it's aviation divisions in one brand: Jet2.com. Since then Jet2.com also operates the contract-charter and freight flights which were formerly operated by Channel Express. The low cost airline now also operate the contract-charter and freight flights, and employs around 900 people.

Unlike many other low cost carriers, Jet2.com tend to use principal airports such as Marco Polo International Airport in Venice and Charles de Gaulle International Airport in Paris. Like other low-cost carriers, tickets may only be booked over the internet or by telephone. Seats are allocated at check in, on a first come first served basis.
