Avalon Hill is a game company that specializes in war or strategic board games.

Avalon Hill pioneered many of the of concepts of modern conflict simulation wargaming. These include such concepts as the use of a hexagonal grid, zones of control (ZOC), stacking of units, an odds-based combat results table (CRT), terrain effects on movement, troop strength, and troop morale to board games based upon historical events. Complex play could have games lasting several days and they even set up a system so people could play games by mail.
