2004 Statistics

The tables below comparatively quantify the number of articles in the different Wikipedias on certain dates. Every language with at least one article in addition to the front page is now listed. In addition, a row has been added to quantify the number of NEW ARTICLES that have been added to each Wikipedia in the three months since January 1, 2004. It is envisaged that further such comparisons will be made at three-monthly intervals (July 1, October 1, January 1, etc).

Being Slavic is very fashionable these days. In the week of May 15-22, the Ukrainian Wikipedia put on an extraordinary growth spurt, adding almost a thousand articles in seven days, increasing its size by almost a third. This extraordinary growth was bettered only by the giant English, German, and Japanese wikipedias. Fatigued by its unprecedented sprint, Ukrainian has stopped for a breather and settled back (temporarily, we hope) to its normal sedate growth rate, but the last ten days (May 22 to June 1) have witnessed an even more remarkable surge in the Bulgarian wikipedia, which has more than doubled its size and broken the 5000-article barrier, assisted, it seems, by a bot similar to our own (now dormant) Rambot. The 5053-article figure registered when I checked earlier this afternoon; when I checked again a few minutes ago, it was getting closer to 6000. I have not updated the figure, however; I got the statistics for all wikipedias in the mid-afternoon, and for consistency, I don't think I should update just one of them - even though its growth-while-you-watch explosion is continuing unabated.

The * column denotes rank change against last year's ranking, ** against last month's ranking. N means a new entry, - means no change. New articles, growth, rank and diff are measured against a full calendar year or month. Diff is the relative growth compared to the other Wikipedias, i.e. the difference between the present and past share. New share is the share among the new articles. Fastest Growing Wikipedias

Fastest Growing by Percentage

Here is a list of the 10 fastest growing Wikipedias, calculated as a percentage from December 19 2003 to April 1 2004 (not counting Wikipedias founded since then):

  1. Basque (Euskara) - 5556%
  2. Croatian (Hrvatski) - 863%
  3. عربية (Arabic) - 440%
  4. Serbian (Srpski) - 434%
  5. Turkish (Türkçe) - 133%
  6. Greek - 307%
  7. Portuguese (Português) - 264%
  8. Welsh (Cymraeg) - 227%
  9. Galician (Galego) - 214%
  10. Hindi - 188%

This measure is somewhat biased towards recently founded Wikipedias, where an initially small number of articles can yield a staggering percentage increase without adding too many new articles numerically. But clearly languages once used in the Ottoman Empire are doing well, with 5 of the top 10 places! The Atlantic coast of Iberia alone claims another 3...

The net growth of all Wikipedias was 49% (amazing for a three month period.)

Fastest Growing by Number of New Articles

Here is a list of the 10 fastest growing Wikipedias, by article count from January 1 2004 to April 1 2004 (not counting Wikipedias founded since then):

  1. English - 49371 (27.33%)
  2. German (Deutsch) - 28467 (15.76%)
  3. Japanese (日本語) - 15782 (8.74%)
  4. French (Français) - 9421 (5.22%)
  5. Polish (Polska) - 8253 (4.57%)
  6. Dutch (Nederlands) - 6372 (3.53%)
  7. Swedish (Svenska) - 6277 (3.48%)
  8. Spanish (Castellano) - 6074 (3.36%)
  9. Chinese (中文) - 4350 (2.41%)
  10. Italian (Italiano) - 3296 (1.82%)

The rankings of the Wikipedias with the most new articles is the same as the list of the Wikipedias with the most articles total with a few exceptions. The Dutch and Swedish Wikipedias have switched places in this ranking. Also, The Chinese Wikipedia is 9th in growth and 12th in total number of articles. The Italian Wikipedia is 10th in growth and 11th in total number of articles. These two Wikipedias can be expected to enter the top 10 Wikipedias for total number of article if these trends continue.

The total number of new articles in all Wikipedias was 180,624 bringing the total to 594,769.

Greatest Relative Change

The two following lists rank fifteen Wikipedias according to the change in their percentage of the total number of Wikipedia articles.

Relative Decline

  2. Dansk (Danish) -0.69%
  3. Esperanto -0.57%
  4. Svenska (Swedish) -0.37%
  5. Nederlands (Dutch) -0.27%

In three months, the English share of Wikipedia articles has gone down by 6.34 percent (from 46.36 percent to 40.02 percent). While English still has more new articles than any other language, they represent only 27.33 percent of the total, a sign that speakers of other languages are taking up the challenge - and giving us a run for our money too. The other four languages were established early, so took an early lead, but as new projects have been established in other languages with much larger numbers of fluent speakers and/or internet users, many of the languages that got Wikipedias established earlier, although still growing, are in decline as a percentage of the whole.

German is one of the few languages with wikipedias established early to be maintaining a growth rate considerably higher than that of the Wikipedia project as a whole. The figures are slightly deceptive, as most of this growth has taken place in the last month, triggered, it would seem, by massive media attention which netted hundreds of new contributors to the German Wikipedia. The high growth rate in Japan is due in part to the explosion of internet access in that country.
