St. Xavier's College, Kolkata
St. Xavier's College is located in Kolkata, India and is named after St. Francis Xavier, a Jesuit saint of the 16th Century, who travelled to India. The College was founded by the Society of Jesus, a Christian religious group started by Saint Ignatius of Loyola in 1540. Since its inception, the Jesuits have toiled in the field of education, among other things, and were even called the school-masters of Europe at one time.
The Jesuits have established many colleges named after St. Francis Xavier in various parts of India. The best known ones are in Kolkata , Ranchi, and Mumbai. St. Xaviers College, Kolkata, is affiliated to the University of Calcutta. It is located in Park Street and very well known for its economics, commerce and English faculty. The commerce department conducts its classes in the morning i.e. the students are done with classes by 10:00 AM and normally work during the day.
It is very well suited for those pursuing other professional certification like chartered accountants and cost accountants. It is know for its excellent faculties, infrastructure and strong sense of discipline.
The collegial motto is "Nihil Ultra," Latin for "Nothing Beyond."
Its alumni call themselves Xaverians and the college fest is known as Xavotsav.
Famous alumni include Norman Pritchard, Jyoti Basu, Utpal Dutt, Saurav Ganguly, Leander Paes and Lakshmi Niwas Mittal.
Famous guests and visitors include Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa.
This is the first college in Eastern India which is to gain autonomy from Calcutta University.
