Neostigmine is a parasympathomimetic, specifically, a reversible cholinesterase inhibitor. By interfering with the metabolism of acetylcholine, neostigmine indirectly stimulates both nicotinic and muscarinic receptors. It is used to treat Myasthenia gravis and to treat urinary retention resulting from general anaesthetic.
