The Issei Japanese are Japanese-Americans who arrived in the United States before the Immigration Act of 1924.

In Japanese American communitees, they generally had more rights and privilages compared with the Nisei (their children), and the Sansei (their grandchildren).

Even though many of them were naturalized American citizens, the Issei were forcibly interned with the Nisei and Sansei during WWII.
