Pennsylvania is a state of the United States of America. Has given name to the Pennsylvanian time period in geology. The state was founded as a colony by William Penn, and the name is from "Penn's Woods" which when translated into Latin is 'pennsylvania'. It was originally founded as a place of religious freedom for Quaker people.

Pennsylvania's government is unique as it was based on consensus rather than voting.

Pennsylvania was one of the thirteen colonies that revolted against British rule in the American Revolution.
