Guugu Yimidhirr (also Guguyimidjir, Kukuyimidir, Koko Imdudji, Gugu Yimijir, Guuguu Yimithirr) is an Australian Aboriginal language spoken by the Guugu Yimithirr people who lived near Cooktown in Northern Queensland.

History

In 1770, words of Guugu Yimidhirr were written down when Captain Cook's ship the Endeavour was being repaired in northeast Queensland. This was the first European encounter with an Australian language.

Examples

The English word kangaroo is a borrowing from Guugu Yimidhirr gangurru (/ɡaŋʊrʊ/).
