Diomede is a city located in Nome Census Area, Alaska. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city was 146.

Diomede is located on the western face of Little Diomede Island in the Bering Strait. Its residents are primarily of Ingalikmiut (Inupiat) Eskimo origin.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.4 km² (2.8 mi²). 7.4 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 146 people, 43 households, and 31 families residing in the city. The population density was 19.8/km² (51.4/mi²). There were 47 housing units at an average density of 6.4/km² (16.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 6.16% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 92.47% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 43 households out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 20.9% were married couples living together, 32.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.9% were non-families. 18.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 0.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.40 and the average family size was 4.00.

In the city the population was spread out with 43.8% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 17.1% from 45 to 64, and 6.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 22 years. For every 100 females there were 114.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 121.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $23,750, and the median income for a family was $24,583. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $26,875 for females. The per capita income for the city was $9,944. 35.4% of the population and 41.4% of families were below the poverty line. 33.8% of those under the age of 18 and 44.4% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
