John Poindexter was the National Security Advisor during the Ronald Reagan presidency. He was convicted in 1990 for conspiracy, lying to Congress, defrauding the government, and destruction of evidence in the Iran-Contra Affair. The conviction was overturned in 1991 on grounds that he had been granted immunity from prosecution as a result of his testimony before Congress.

On February 13, 2002, he became the Director of the Pentagon's Information Awareness Office: a secretive intelligence gathering office.
