Hidden Gems
The Portal:Russia/Hidden Gems is to list recently unearthed articles that cover Russia-related topics which have been (a) neglected for quite some time and (b) require serious intervention of Russian editors. It is an extension of this page, according to the Russian proverb: "New" is something forgotten for good. As a rule of thumb, don't add articles edited by active members of project Russia.

- Sorry, CTAPT, but this article is притянута за уши and высосана из пальца. I'd vote for its deletion. Unless I see an article on Bulgarian playgrounds or something like that :). - Please vote. Cmapm 20:00, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
- Actually, this article could be a part of a bigger article about Soviet urbanization and city-building policies. A certain number of playgrounds was mandatory for each microdistrict, just as there was supposed to be a certain number of shops/schools/kindergartens, as well as a дом быта, and a palace of culture covering a certain area. While the article just about a playground is viable, it is poorly titled (although I am having trouble coming up with a better title) and badly needs references (which as Cmapm indicated are hard to come by).—Ëzhiki (ërinacëus amurënsis) 20:09, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
- I admit, that generally it may be not important at all for most of other people, although it's important for me. I am not "the truth in the last instance". Actually, I'd compare it to hypothetic article about Soviet automats of aerated waters. :) But you should refer to community to ask/vote, whether it's important or not, not to me. - Downtown Saint Petersburg and Arbat by User:Fisss. I can't see any rationale for such articles, when we have detailed description of the downtown in Saint Petersburg and a separate article for Arbat Street. The guy needs mentoring, as he daily starts arbitrary cats (e.g., Category:Moscow-City), indulges in cut & paste moves (see here), and uploads non-free copyrighted photographs as {PD-self}. Many of his edits are still frustrating: "Madame Malinovskaya, Pushkin's wife, the non-biological mother of his children", "Greboyedova canal", or "Pavel Noshchokin, one of Pushkin's closest friends". --Ghirla -трёп- 19:14, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

- List of districts and neighborhoods of Moscow, by Fisss, old friend. Can someone please explain at last what exactly a "Moscow neighborhood" is? I am horrible at Moscology (or whatever that's called).—Ëzhiki (ërinacëus amurënsis) 19:14, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
- I don't understand it, either. The phrase seems to have been taken from Category:Moscow neighborhoods, which was started by KNewman to list suburban localities like Abramtsevo. This guy Fisss seems to be reforming. He started Zamoskvoreche (sic!), Presnya, and Moscow-City (sic!), but the pictures which he tags {PD-self} still look suspiciously like copyvios to me. I would list them among requests for investigation. --Ghirla -трёп- 19:36, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
- Well, officially, Moscow has raiony and mikroraiony (the latter are usually numbered, like 7 mikroraion; some have names like Zyablikovo). There are raiony such as Orekhovo-Borisovo, Chertanovo, Medvedkovo, Nikulino etc. I'm just not sure if neighborhood is a correct name for them. KNewman 07:28, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- Those are called administrative units. One can colloquially call them neighborhoods, of course, but the problem with that term is that it's ambiguous. If no one objects, I am going to clean up that category, recategorizing its entries, and delete it before it grows out of control. If you wish to keep this category, please come up with the definition of what exactly it should cover. I think, however, that this is one of those ideas that seemed good at the time :)—19:03, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- Sounds like a good idea. --Ghirla -трёп- 19:14, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

The opening says that "the battle ended with a large portion of the Leningrad-Moscow Highway in Soviet hands for the first time since September, 1941, which was an important step towards resuming the offensive", and yet it is claimed as a German victory in the battlebox. - Strictly speaking the categories are not identical: a Russian Orthodox Monastery in Jerusalim or in Australia is not covered by the Category:Monasteries in Russia and an occasional Buddist or a Roman-Catholic monastery in Russia (if there exist any) would not be covered by the Category:Russian Orthodox monasteries. I still think that maintaining of two almost identical cathegories would be a mistake (as on a hindsight I think was Category:Russian people in the United States and Category:Russian-Americans). Which one should go? Or maybe we can have Category:Monastery of Russia that would cover both ROC monasteries abroad and non-Orthodox monastery in Russia? abakharev 11:37, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

- The article has been updated with info asserting his notability. In response to your question, people submit articles on certain university professors because they have contributed substantially to a field of academic interest. Your disdain for professors does not necessarily make them all non-notable by WP standards. Briangotts (Talk) (Contrib) 15:58, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
