Minster (church)

A minster is a type of cathedral.
The word is derived from Latin monasterium and was used for the church belonging to a monastery or a chapter.
In the case of the Minster at Ulm, Germany, it was used for a particularly prosperous parish church boasting a plethora of clergy.
There are many placenames related to "minster":
- Müstair, a village in Graubünden, Switzerland on the site of a Benedictine monastery;
- Munster, a town im Département Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France, on the site of a 7th century abbey;
- Münstereifel, a spa town in the Eifel region of Germany, the site of a 9th century abbey;
