Free will

Free will is the philosophical doctrine that claims that beings are able to act according to their desires. For example, a proponent of free will would say that the reader chose to read this article today, and could equally well have chosen not to do so. Compare determinism.

Some philosophers believe that free will is equivalent to having a soul, and thus that (at least some) animals don't have free will.

The question of free will versus determinism is one of the central debates of Philosophy.
