#wikipedia-en-vandalism invite only?

Essjay, I had left you a note about not being able to join this channel and either you fixed it or the problem resolved itself when I tried again a few days later. Again, I'm getting the same invite only message. Details on this would be appreciated. Antonrojo 16:22, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As I said before, that channel is no longer in use. Join #vandalism-en-wp instead, that is the correct name for the channel. There was a redirect in place between the two, but I've removed it and instead directed #wikipedia-en-vandalism to #wikipedia-en. Joining #vandalism-en-wp directly will solve your problem. Essjay TalkContact 16:47, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I missed the connection between the new alias and the blocking, partly because the #wikipedia-en-vandalism stopped working and then worked again later, apparently for no reason. Antonrojo 17:01, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed the channel isnt working only Essjay doesnt want it to work inconviniancing many people. Essjay doesnt even care to explain why. --Cool CatTalk|@ 21:49, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I explained it four times, the last time in bold. If you aren't getting it, I can't help you with that. Essjay TalkContact 21:54, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cool Cat please stop attacking Essjay, he is no more enthusiastic about the #wikipedia-en-vandalism channel closing then you are, and is not responsible for it being shut down. Prodego talk 23:25, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be curious to know the reasons for the change. One thing that would help is to change the denial message from 'You were removed from #wikipedia-en-vandalism : Invite Only (+i)' to a redirect notice or tack on the notice if it is really a private channel now. As it stands, the Recent Changes Patrol and other sources direct people towards the channel where they get that offputing message. Antonrojo 02:10, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It is that primary channels (ones with a single # in front) can only be used by offical organizations, and there is not an official Wikipedia anti-vandalism group.
Here is a quote from Essjay on the matter:
"The channel #wikipedia-en-vandalism is considered by freenode to be an official Wikipedia channel for the use of the official Wikipedia vandalism group. No such group exists. Until such time as there is a Vandalism group on the English Wikipedia designated by the Wikimedia Foundation as the official English Wikipedia Vandalism group, that channel will remain unused. That is why it redirects to #wikipedia-en, the official channel for the English Wikipedia." --Essjay

Thanks, Prodego, for picking up on this for me. As for Antonrojo's question, that's a system message, I can't control it. However, you should only be getting that message if you have +Q set for your nick. Try typing /mode yournick -Q and then joining the channel; it should automatically redirect you to #wikipedia-en, rather than giving you the messsage about invite only. can you sign onto aim? i tried to im u it wouldnt go thru. im under usename wikiuser1935

Please be aware, I do not handle checkuser requests by Instant Messenger; you're welcome to contact me to discuss things, but I will not act on anything via IM. Essjay TalkContact 20:45, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry Essjay! Didn't see you there. Prodego talk 20:58, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm current working on sorting list of sockpuppeters, imposters and attack users. Even I'm enclosing two similar usernames with in the heading, so that the capital "i" and the lowercase "l" look differences of each other, to avoid confusion. I believe User:CIyde is a main sockpuppeter, which you tagged with {{SockpuppetCheckuser}}. I intended to move all of the sock puppets to Category:Wikipedia:Suspected sockpuppets of Clyde instead of placing them on Category:Wikipedia:Suspected sockpuppets of CIyde. Indeed, User:Clyde has no edits on his contribs and never appears on the block log. It had a red link before. I'm not sure all his sock puppets are suspected, but I'm pretty sure they all are confirmed by Checkuser. If they're totally confirmed sock puppets, we'll probably moved to another category not including "suspected". You can decide if it is true or not, or we don't need to add any verified or known sock puppet to Category:Wikipedia:Suspected_sockpuppets_of_[SOCKPUPPETER]. -- ADNghiem501 23:58, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a bit confused, but it think I get the gist of what you're saying: You're moving all the sockpuppets I tagged as sockpuppets of CIyde to sockpuppets of Clyde, and want to be sure they are confirmed. All the sockpuppets I tagged with {{SockpuppetCheckuser}} are confirmed, any that are not tagged with that, I didn't. You may find User:Essjay/Checkuser/Cases/CIyde helpful. If I've totally missed the ball here, let me know, and I'll try again. Essjay TalkContact 20:39, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I couldn't respond to your message yesterday. I was unfairly blocked by Curps, but dbenbenn unblocked me lately. Unfortunately, Category:Wikipedia:Suspected sockpuppets of Clyde was deleted; actually, it'd not been deleted while I left the first message on your talk page. However, the list of all sock puppets of CIyde which are tagged with {{SockpuppetCheckuser}} were removed from this category. The reason was that I removed a category enclosed with <includeonly></includeonly> [1]. I'll change Clyde to CIyde on each page that you tagged. Clyde never applies to sockpuppeter, just in case. -- ADNghiem501 18:00, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation

The Mediation Cabal

You are a disputant in a case listed under Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases. We invite you to be a mediator in a different case. Please read How do I get a mediator assigned to my case? for more information.

This template is very confusing; it seems to suggest I've offered to mediate a case somewhere (um, no, I'm the chair of the Mediation Committee, I have plenty to do there), and leaves it to me to hunt down which mediation it is I've been named it. It could do with a serious rewrite. Essjay TalkContact 20:43, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your attention, even if you couldn't solve the glare :) Do you happen to know anyone who might be able to help? TheGrappler 19:02, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not off the top of my head, but let me think about it and get back to you. Essjay TalkContact 20:36, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yea

You can now give bot flags, just what you need more work :) -- Tawker 00:27, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So I noticed! I'm not sure it's been posted to the mailing lists yet; I'll have to check with Rob. Essjay TalkContact 18:12, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

username change

I already requested my username Arsath to be renamed as Mystic, but you said it is not possible as the user already exists. I just checked the edit count of this user and found the user hasn't contributed at all, can we usurp this username (Mystic). Thanks in advance Mystic 06:05, 22 April 2006 (UTC) P.S. I've posted this message at name change request page, reposting it here just in case you didn't notice..[reply]

Unfortunately, we can't. There is currently a policy under discussion to allow this, but as of now, our policies do not allow for usurption of usernames. If there is another name you'd like, however, I can change to that for you. Essjay TalkContact 18:13, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Do you think I can get this name Mystìc with a "ì" instead of the "i" Mystic 18:18, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Generally we would say no, because of the chance of confusion, but since the other editor isn't editing, I see no reason we can't. I'll do the change now. Essjay TalkContact 18:24, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

All done. Essjay TalkContact 18:31, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but my userpage archives all that is not there? any idea? Mystic 18:43, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WOuld you take note of this and the user

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:86.10.231.219#Appropriate_Remedies_for_Appropriate_Circumstances

Via links it mentions you, not complimentarily. There is a larger problem with this user in that here and I think elsewhere he is an accomplished and persistent disrupter. Midgley 10:01, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I seem to remember having dealt with the user before, but all I can remember was that there was a lot of screaming and very little resolving of anything. I'm not sure what the present circumstances are (as I recall, I was involved several months ago), but if there is disruption going on, raise it at ANI or take it to Arbitration. Essjay TalkContact 18:17, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Inquiry

Are you seriously considering arbcoming me over an IRC channel? If so why? --Cool CatTalk|@ 17:10, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I certainly am. You're harassing me, and I'm sick of it; I've answered you at least four times, and I'm tired of wasting my time. I don't know if you think you can strongarm me into releasing the channel continuing to harass me until I am so sick of being harassed that I just give up, but it isn't going to work. If the harassment can't be put to a stop under your current ArbCom restrictions, then we'll go to Arbitration and get new restrictions. Essjay TalkContact 18:23, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Harrasment? How so? I think I am the one being harrased as I am the one who was banned. I am aslo the one trying to get his bot running. Besides arbcom has absolutely no juristiction on IRC as IRC is unoffical and informal. IRC logs cannot be presented as evidence on arbcom hearings for example.
You haven't explained me WHY once. You have merely been avoiding me, nothing more.

Departure

Thanks for making the name change, Essjay. It's been a lot of fun, but I feel I've gotten what I wanted and contributed what I needed to WP. I may lurk around and make a few minor changes here and there, but WP became a time sink for me. I've got a doctorate to finish. :) We have one another's email addresses. Stay in touch if you'd like; you've been one of my favorite parts of WP. --Semi
