Welcome!

Hi Shmitra, and a warm welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you have enjoyed editing as much as I did so far and decide to stay. Unfamiliar with the features and workings of Wikipedia? Don't fret! Be Bold! Here's some good links for your reference and that'll get you started in no time!

Most Wikipedians would prefer to just work on articles of their own interest. But if you have some free time to spare, here are some open tasks that you may want to help out :

  • RC Patrol - Keeping a lookout for vandalism.
  • Cleanup - Help make unreadable articles readable.
  • Requests - Wanted on WP, but hasn't been created.
  • Merge - Combining duplicate articles into one.
  • Wikiprojects - So many to join, so many to choose from...Take your pick!

Oh yes, don't forget to sign when you write on talk pages, simply type four tildes, like this: ~~~~. This will automatically add your name and the time after your comments. And finally, if you have any questions or doubts, don't hesitate to contact me on my talk page. Once again, welcome! =)

Voting for Biography collaboration of the week

Hi, the article Sheikh Hasina has been nominated for voting at "Biography collaboration of the week". What this will do is that for a week, people of the team would contribute to make the article enriched, balanced and complete. Since this is an article about a Bangladeshi politician and a rich article would promote Bangladesh more, I think regardless of political beliefs we can vote for it. Even if you are opposed to her political ideology, you can be sure that both her positive and negative sides would be presented in a Collaboration of the week article. Please vote at Wikipedia:Biography Collaboration of the Week#Sheikh Hasina .28July_21.29 by signing your name with # ~~~~ . Thanks.

Bangladesh WikiProject

Hi Shmitra,

I felt you might be interested in working on articles on/related to Bangladesh. For a start check out our Bangladesh Project page and see if you want to join us. We also want to make a page for each district and fix the pages on the divisions. (Tasks 6 and 7 on the project page.) Do you think you'd want to help us out? (Leave a message on my talk page.)

Be bold!

You might look into it, claims Bangladesh only has 100 puja mandaps!!! I myself remember 20+ in Chittagong alone. --Ragib 21:10, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

District article common format

I started a discussion on the common format for District articles in Talk:Districts of Bangladesh. Please participate in the discussion and add your ideas. Thanks. --Ragib 00:12, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I put a move proposal to change the name to "Battle of Palashee" or "Battle of Palashi". Would you add your comments in the talk page? Thanks. --Ragib 20:22, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ramakrishna

Hello. I noticed your work on the Vivekananda article. Would you like to help with Devanagari and Bangla versions of Ramakrishna's name? --goethean 18:26, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. My impression is that Devanagari is just another term for the lettering used in Hindi. --goethean 20:05, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. I thought that you had edited the Hindi words in the Vivekananda article, but I must have been mistaken. --goethean 20:19, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

J Das

Hi there,

Nice to see the Bangla script on J Das's name!

However, JD's last name is spelt with a "talebosh-sho", not a "dontosh-sho" -- this is also how it is spelt on the official edition of his "Kobita Shomogro." Would you be able to put in the correct "sho"?

Thanks! --Peripatetic 00:34, 22 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting, I think I saw his name spelt with "donto-sha" rather thatn "Talobbo-sha" as Periapatetic suggests. Usually, the surname Das is written with Donto-sha in Bangla, and I think most of the copies of his books I saw, had donto-sha. Of course, I saw some pirated versions of his books with the Talobbo sha spelling. So, ppm, what do you think about that? --Ragib 01:26, 22 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Image Tagging Image:Lalon.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Lalon.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairusein|article name}} or {{fairuse}}. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks so much. --SCEhardT 23:13, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Bangla and linguistics

Request for edit summary

Hi. I am a bot, and I am writing to you with a request. I would like to ask you, if possible, to use edit summaries a bit more often when you contribute. The reason an edit summary is important is because it allows your fellow contributors to understand what you changed; you can think of it as the "Subject:" line in an email. For your information, your current edit summary usage is 1% for major edits and 3% for minor edits. (Based on the last 150 major and 126 minor edits in the article namespace.)

This is just a suggestion, and I hope that I did not appear impolite. You do not need to reply to this message, but if you would like to give me feedback, you can do so at the feedback page. Thank you, and happy edits, Mathbot 02:30, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bangla names

ppm, when you have time, can you add Bangla names for some more articles, may be starting from List of Bangladesh-related topics? For example Victory Day (Bangladesh) doesn't have Bangla name, nor does BD Independence day page. Thanks. --Ragib 04:28, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Making refs into two columns

Is it possible to make the ref section in Bangladesh into 2 columns, as in Rabindranath Tagore? 35 refs are taking a lot of space .. --Ragib 02:59, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Handshake

Hey! No probs! This things happen. Today only I made a disgraceful mistake wjile commenting on the comments of such an user as Nichalp in Wikipedia:Peer review/Kolkata. Anyway, when are you planning to take Bangladesh to FAC? It's high time!!--Dwaipayanc 19:55, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you on Satyajit Ray

Thank you for your works on Satyajit Ray. Let alone FAC, I have been trying to make it an Indian selected article for some time but not yet succeeded. It's not a single-man job. Now that you have come, I feel elated and hopeful. Please try to bring others also. Once Bangladesh becomes an FA, I hope Ragib can also contribute. The article needs lot of references, besides, of course, further enhancement on content. Please comment on the Indian selected article nominations page for the article. Thanks a lot :). Bye.--Dwaipayanc 11:27, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! It's quite a long way for Satyajit Ray to go for an FA. I dont even see peer review shortly. Have to work on it. Movie screenshots and posters should be ok , I gues ! Please comment.--Dwaipayanc 16:30, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Help needed

Hi ! I need some help. This regards the reference method. After working in Bangladesh, you have become adept at how to cite in the Harvard style. I simply could not understand the way. I see you have done it in Satyajit Ray. Of you have time, could you please spend about half an hour (max) to help the references cited in Kolkata arrange in the Harvard style ? Or at least, could you tell me in simple terms how to cite books, websites etc in the Harvard methon? Thanks.--Dwaipayanc 20:33, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

On Satyajit Ray

I think you already have found out many references . I just stumbled upon one here. I guess you have already found it by googling. Anyway, just in case...--Dwaipayanc 05:15, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am adding some critic's comment in the section "Critical reception". Ar first, as you pointed out in the discussion page, rhe comments may seem somewhat disjointed as weel as unnecessary. Please feel free to rearrange/ remove as you feel necessary. For example, 3 comments are on Pather Panchali. I shall be adding comments on other films also, but slowly, and removing seemingly extra comments later on. Thanks.--Dwaipayanc 05:52, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! I shall add the the critic's comments on individual films on the respective articles of the films. And general comments on Ray in the section "critical reception" henceforth. You should surf the individual film articles to see if any of the comments are suitable for the main article Satyajit Ray and place them accordingly. I think this strategy should work fine, and will cause less amount of temporary flaws in the main article Satyajit Ray. Please let me know what do you think. Bye...--Dwaipayanc 06:03, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! I started to read the biographical writting of Bijoya Ray when it started appearing in "Desh". But soon could not but discontinue. The biography was so peculiarly "feminine", if I may use the term! I mean almost all the time there were talks about who was who (the relatives), which lady was beautiful, where they did marketing, how poor were they, how beautiful was Sandip in infancy, how Bijoya Ray gave birth to Sandip without feeling a little bit of labor pain, how mrX or MrY came to meet the family and what gift did they bring, and in which corner of the drawing room did Bijoya placed that adorable gift - OMG!
Of course, scattered in between those irritating stuff were invaluable comments. Unfortunately, I do not have those issues of "Desh" now. it would have been great if we had such an interesting bit of info like the alleged affair! I will try to find out if any of my friends have archived those "Desh"s. Bye--Dwaipayanc 05:24, 5 April 2006 (UTC)!![reply]

Bangla wikipedia

Hi! Are you there in the Bangla wikipedia? If yes, what's the user name? Mine is same. Bye!--Dwaipayanc 04:08, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Awards

Hi! Already there was an article Awards of Satyajit Ray. Now another Awards for Satyajit Ray. Which one—"of" or "for"— is correct? Please move one article to the other accordingly. Bye.--Dwaipayanc 05:26, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you make the "Filmography" multi-column, please take care the English names of the films are also included. You can reduce the text size, if needed. Bye!--Dwaipayanc 05:34, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Year problem

I was thinking exactly the same thing when editing! So far as I remember, I previously edited the filmography and made the previous complete form. And I copied the filmography from some other source, of course. Have to check out if something wrong happened then!

Hmm! Checked at satyajitray.org. It was a mistake. Correcting! Bye.--Dwaipayanc 19:33, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Culture question

Yup. Thanks for pointing it out. I've added Bangla cinema . Also in the Culture of India article. have added a line on the "nono-commercial" directors. Bye.--Dwaipayanc 07:04, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User bn template

Hi ppm,

Refer to {{User bn}} and its sub-templates. It uses the word "ব্যবহারকারী", which I feel is quite less popular (in my opinion). I contacted a few Bengalis and even some of them didn't knew there was any such word. I feel that it should be changed to either "সদস্য" or "উপযোগকর্তা". I wanted your opinion on this. Also, I realized that bengali rendering was a problem with my settings and if you want, you may change the font size in Bangladesh to how it was initially.

Regards,

-Ambuj Saxena (talk) 15:41, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to get into the conversation, but actually, this is the standard term used in the Bangla wikipedia. The last example you said, "উপযোগকর্তা", isn't even a common word (I am yet to see it ever used in a book other than the dictionary). But ব্যবহারকারী is widely used in media. --Ragib 16:06, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If its a standard and accepted term then this is not an issue. I am myself not a Bengali so I don't know enough. Why it struck me was because I had never heard of "ব্যবহারকারী" before. The English user templates say "This user is...", which translates to "উপযোগকর্তা", while in Hindi it goes like "इस सदस्य..." which translates to "সদস্য". Anyway, thanks for letting me know. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 16:20, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
সদস্য means member, not user. A user someone who uses something. Use = ব্যবহার. user = ব্যবহারকারী. This is a widely used term, even in spoken Bangla and written text. But I've never really heard of the term উপযোগকর্তা *anywhere*, not in spooken or written Bangla. I guess ব্যবহারকারী is the most commonly used term which convey the meaning. But anyway, I'll discuss it with other admins in the Bangla wikipedia, where we actually use the namespace ব্যবহারকারী , reperesenting the user namespace. Thanks. --Ragib 18:00, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the insight guys, but you don't have to take this so seriously. As I have said, I am not a Bengali myself and "উপযোগকর্তা" can at best be said as my Original Research. Its just that I asked a few other Bengalis and they told that "উপযোগকর্তা" will be a valid Bangla word. This does not mean that it is being used anywhere else. I was motivated to raise this issue by a friend who never heard either "উপযোগকর্তা" or "ব্যবহারকারী" and told that he would prefer the former. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 18:17, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, this is then okay I guess. Ragib is a admin in Bangla wikipedia, so he is really the person to talk to.--ppm 17:03, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bangla

Ok. I will try for some old Bangla stuff. Let's see.--Dwaipayanc 17:49, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats

Yo! Congrats for Bangladesh.--Dwaipayanc 06:15, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kolkata

Hi! Kolkata is FAC. Please have some say.--Dwaipayanc 18:10, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yup. I removed the double referencing and repetitive comment from thr lead in Kolkata. Thanks. Sorry that I could not work on Satyajit Ray despite it being the Indian COTW this week. Bye.--Dwaipayanc 05:32, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! I have a request. Can you or Ragib bhai create the IPA pronounciation for Kolkata? I do not know how to do it. So asking for help.--Dwaipayanc 19:46, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I actually don't know how to do this. Maybe Ragib can help--ppm 23:40, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! It is done now. Thanks.--Dwaipayanc 18:46, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Satyajit

I hardly took a look on Satyajit Ray lately, even if it is INCOTW. sort of busy with Kolkata FAC and related stuffs. You can understand! Please go on with whatever you think right. I will see later. Thanks. regards.--Dwaipayanc 05:40, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
