Introduction

This is a fun and simple game. It's in the Sandbox - feel free to join in! It's a good place to practice making links to articles, and to start looking for interesting articles on Wikipedia.

How to Play

By way of example, a game might start off with: cat. Then, the next person might add cat, dog. And after a few more rounds, we might get cat, dog, pet, animal, forest, tree, ...

Simply, the game involves adding a single word to the list that is related to the previous one. Avoid repeating words, and keep the links tasteful! Clearly, as the game develops, one gets a pretty long list! If you're stuck for ideas, link to the last word in the list and add the first link that appears on that page as the next link. Thus Sebastian Junger would be followed by 1962, and Latin by ancient.

Try to update the word count each time you add a word. The official limit for the main game is 400 words.

Occasionally, it's good to have some branches that diverge the main game into several sections. The official limit for said branches is 80 words. Try not to make a branch when the main game is about to close down; that will only store your branch away in the archives. Please only branch when the word exists in the word list.

In spirit of the game, please only type one word consecutively. Then, another person can respond to your word, and the game continues!

The game

We are now on Game #9!

Ultra Word Association

This is a fun derivative of word association that involves a bit more creativity. It is also a good way to start seeing how you make Tables on Wikipedia. And speaking of creativity, there are five variations to the game!

How to Play

Simply add your word to the grid, either going sideways or downwards. One word at a time please!

  • If you go sideways, your new word needs to associate with the word to the LEFT of it.
  • If you go downwards, your word need to associate with the word ABOVE it.
  • If there is a word ABOVE and to the LEFT of your word, it needs to be associated with BOTH of them.
  • You can't add a word so that there's an empty gap either above it or to the left of it.
  • You are not allowed red links.

By the time we can reach the final gridsquare, (bottom right), we will have a word associated with every single other word in the grid, that began as the top-left square.

Obviously, it is harder to fill in the in-between squares as you have to be creative to find the word that associates twice. Thus more satisfaction and praise goes to the guys who can get us closer to that elusive bottom-right square. If absolutely necessary, a previous word can be overwritten.

Give it a go!

Example

Here's what the beginning of a game might look like:

Angels Demons Fire Hose
Halo Kill Gun Water cannon
Ring TV Dirty Harry

Here's how those words are working. The highlighted squares show how the bottom-rightmost word is related to the one ABOVE and to the LEFT of it.

Angels
First word.
Demons
Related to Angels.
Fire
Related to Demons.
Hose
Related to Fire.
Halo
Related to Angels.
Kill
Related to Halo (via the X-Box game) AND related to Demons as Demons kill
Gun
Related to Kill AND related to Fire via Gunfire.
Water cannon
Related to Gun and related to Hose as the hose feeds water to the cannon.
Ring
Related to Halo as it's a Ring
TV
Related to Ring and Kill as in "The Ring", the TV Kills
Dirty Harry
Related to Gun and TV as Dirty Harry uses guns on TV

This is achieved with the code:

| [[Angels]] || [[Demons]] || [[Fire]] || [[Hose]]
|-
| [[Halo]] || [[Kill]] || [[Gun]] || [[Water Cannon]]
|-
| [[Ring]] || [[TV]] || [[Dirty Harry]] ||

How to start a new series

The Ultra Word Association has spawned a number of deviants. If you have an idea and are so bold you'd like to try to make it a series, use the following steps:

1. Use [1] to make your table, making or deleting new rows and columns, and changing the background color to suit your series.

2. Come up with a name for it. Four of the deviants have an adjective followed by "word association" or "ultra word association": Fixed, Radial, Psychedelic, and Enigmatic; so following this trend might be a good idea.

3. Provide a good description of how to play in the space above your table, emphasizing those aspects that might get confused easily.

4. Leave any notes about organizing your series; ie, others can archive and start new games, or you'd like to do all of them personally, etc.

5. Post it. You're done for now!

6. When the game is done by your criteria, archive it in the Misc section, providing a summary of the game style and next to the link include in bold end words if any.

7. If your series runs four or more times, you get your own section in the archives! And if you get six or more, you get the Six Award.

Remember, creating new things is just as fun as playing it! So go for it!

Radial ultra game: 'Beit Al Qur'an'

File:WA6.PNG This Ultra Deviant has run six times or more.

The rules are identical to the ultra game, except that the starting point begins in the centre of the box, and words expand out from the centre, associating to all the adjacent cells. Unless your word is in a straight line to the start word (i.e. it is in column D or row H) then it must be adjacent to two existing words.

Reverse Radial Ultra game 'Öland'

As the name sugguests this is the Radial Ultra game in reverse - you start from the four corners and work towards the centre. New words must associate with all existing adjacent ones, and be next to either two existing words or one existing word and the edge of the table. The gold square in the centre of the table must be left to last and assocciate with all four surrounding words.

Psychadelic Word Association: 10 more islands

In this remake of Psychadelic game 1, words are in fixed places throughout the table. Like the radical word association, you can only add on next to a word that's been placed, but unlike it, there are several "islands". This time the islands literally are islands, so the word "island" is prohibited.

Enigmatic Word Association

In this one, based off of PWA2, you don't have an active part in word associating; rather, it is your job to guess which words could fill in the blanks. There are four words put down in a flower-shape, and five mystery words around them that are related to the words that they touch horizontally or vertically. It is your job to guess which words could fit in the five blanks.

Grid Size: 3x3

Guesses

So that this game can become self-sufficient, beneath each guess vote whether you think it works or not. If a guess gets five votes or more for it, it works. If a vote gets three or more no's, cross it off! When all five spaces are working, you can archive this and start a new one. Cheers!

Word Disassociation

Introduction

This is a take-off of the original word association, and hasn't been seen since Game #3.

As with the ultra word association and the ultra branch, leave this here to archive itself separate from the main game. Also, feel free to make a branch occasionally.

How to play

This is much like the regular word association, except instead of trying to put a word that is related to the previous one, you put one that has no relation whatsoever!

Sometimes, the game degenerates back into the normal version of word association, but it really doesn't matter because it's fun either way! (See if you can pick out when these switchovers occur)

Ultra Fixed Word Disassociation: 'Goulash'

This is a spinoff of the Ultra Fixed Word Association. In this one, not only do you not have control over what the initial words are, the "fixed" words are based on the Word Disassociation game, below. In the interests of keeping this game readable on one screen, please keep the words reasonably short :-)

The main word for this third game was chosen as it was not associated with the first or last words of game 1 or with the random article (Neurotic Outsiders).

Ultra Disassociative Vortex

This is similar to the ultra fixed word disassociation, except the difficulty is compounded by there being a spiral of disassociative words, instead of a mere two rows.

Oh, and you have to associate, not disassociate. Have fun :)

Radial Ultra Disassociate-then Associate

Starting form the center, disassociate all the blank spaces in the grid except those marked "associate".Do not touch the marked spaces until the rest of the grid is filled in. Then associate the reserved spaces with ALL of the 4 neighboring words. For the disassociation portion, a new entry does not have to border 2 words- it can be legal bordering only one.

Archive of old games

Normal

(normal games are played out one word after another, with occasional splitting branches.)

Lasted until we had about 400 words on the list, and a bunch of repeated ones.
Our first attempt at word disassociation. Creativity was somewhat lower.
Our third word association game. Lasted until there were around 849 words on the list, including four "branches".
Our fourth word association game. Was limited to 400 words in the main branch, but several branches arose, including two invisible branches.
the fifth word association game.
the sixth word association game, 400 words in the main branch and 5 other branches totaling another 510 words.
  • Game #7 ("Tram""Tom Bombadil")
the seventh word association game.

Ultra

(Ultra games are played out on a 7x15 table, associating from the upper left to the bottom right)

The first Ultra Association game on a 7x15 grid.
Second Ultra-Association game, random seed on 7x15. The game only got to 7x14 when it ended.
Third Ultra-Association game, random seed on 7x15.
Fourth Ultra-Association game, random seed on 7x15.
Fifth Ultra-Association game, random seed on 7x15.
Sixth Ultra-Association game, random seed on 7x15.
Lucky sevens!
No hiding behind the 8 ball during this game!

Fixed

(fixed games are played on a 7x15 grid, starting with the top and left filled and going to the bottom right.)

The branch of an older game, with slightly different rules than ultra that started it all.
The second ultra fixed game.
The third ultra fixed game.
The fourth ultra fixed game.
The fifth ultra fixed game.
Wikipedians hit this game for 6!
Lucky or the seventh deadly sin? Look at the archive and decide for yourself

Radial

(Radial games begin in the center of a 7x15 table and expand outwards.)

  • Radial Ultra #1 ("Albert Einstein""Child", "Malnourishment", "L'Inferno (1911)" and "Sexual slavery")
The first game of Radial Ultra Association
  • Radial Ultra #2 ("Crackpot""Piracy", "Stephen King", "Bikini" and "Madame de Staël")
The second game of Radial Ultra Association
  • Radial Ultra #3 ("Language""BBC Two", "Christmas special", "Fish" and "La Francophonie")
The third game of Radial Ultra Association

The fourth game of Radial Ultra Association
  • Radial Ultra #5 ("Rutland""Witchfinder General", "Second Avenue Line", "Computer Virus" and "Coolness")
The fifth game in the increasingly inaccurately named Radial Ultra Association trilogy
  • Radial Ultra #6 ("ColdFusion""Prison", "Dutch courage", "Sexual abstinence" and "Top Ten")
The sixth game - it seems Wikipedians enjoy radiating words
  • Radial Ultra #7 ("True Lover's Knot""James Bond", "Incineration", "Fireplace" and "Sunset Strip")
Seventh heaven?

Psychadelic

(Psychadelic games feature unusual ultra ideas. Most of them are started by Xhin.)

The first game of Psychadelic Word Association; featured ten words in random places.
Featured four unknown words that had to be guessed at.
In possibly the best effort of word associationists, you had to play the game like psychadelic #1, except all of the first letters are fixed, some of them t, e, a, e, or s. There were only three letters remaining at the end. Well done.
In this edition, you had to Expand out the entire table from one word, reaching all four corners of an 8x8 grid.
In this flavor, you had to-- Well, why don't you read the instructions for yourself?
Your run of the mill radial word association, with one exception...

Misc

(An archive of different game concepts that haven't had four in a series yet.)

  • Radial Ultra Cross #1 ("One""Word surfing champion", "Percussion", "War Pigs" and "Human evolution")
The first game of Radial Ultra Cross Association. The start letters were: "W O R D A S S O C I A T I O N" (vertical) and "C R O S S" (horizontal, centred on the 'O' of 'association')
The second game of Radial Ultra Cross Association. The start letters were "EMERALD", "RINGS" across and "PEARLANDDIAMOND" down.
The third game of Radial Ultra Cross Association. The start letters were "SOUTH" and "CHINA" accross, and "DEUSEXMACHINA" down.
Radial Ultra association in reverse - start at the corners and work to the middle.
  • Enigmatic #1 (Scratching post, Garfield:The movie, pink panther, Dowsing rod, the internet movie database.)
The first game of Enigmatic. Was like a condensed version of psychadelic #2.
Like the Ultra Fixed association games, but the words don't associate with each other.
Same as last time but with different disassociations.
Associate with a sprial of disassociated words.
