Melina Perez (born March 9, 1979 in Los Angeles, California), better known simply as Melina is a Mexican-American professional wrestler and manager, currently working for World Wrestling Entertainment on the SmackDown! brand.

Melina's ring entrance is a display of her flexibility. Standing beside the ring, she will lift her right leg onto the apron, then her left leg (at this point she is doing a split on the apron), then bend her upper body under the bottom rope. Michael Cole and Tazz were quick to label this "The greatest ring entrance in the history of sports entertainment". Recently, Melina has added a high-pitched scream during matches, which Tazz enjoys (and has labeled the "primal scream") and Cole dislikes.

Career

Prior to Perez's career in pro wrestling, she was a fashion model. During her run at modeling, she won the title of Miss California. In 2001, Perez decided to become a professional wrestler after being convinced by Mike Henderson and enrolled in Jesse Hernandez's School of Hard Knocks to train. Perez's debut in Pro Wrestling happened in 2002 by touring the independent wrestling scene. She joined a number of California-based promotions, such as the Empire Wrestling Federation (EWF), and the now-defunct CRUSH all-womens promotion in which she worked with Mickie James. While working as Kyra in various Southern California Indy promotions, Perez received a WWE developmental contract in December, 2003.

Perez made her OVW debut in March 2004 when Matt Cappotelli brought Melina in as a way to taunt Johnny Nitro, who was Melina's ex-boyfriend. However, Melina betrayed Cappotelli and quickly aligned herself with Nitro. Soon after, Nitro teamed with fellow superstar Joey Matthews, now known as Joey Mercury. On November 10, 2004, MNM won the OVW Southern Tag Team Titles.

2005

On the April 14, 2005 edition of Smackdown! Melina debuted along with Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro. The trio, known as MNM, crashed the first ever Carlito's Cabana on which Rey Mysterio was the guest. Melina insulted Rey Mysterio and had Mercury and Nitro give him their finishing move, the Snapshot. The next week on Smackdown, Melina accompanied MNM to the ring for their in ring debut, a WWE Tag Team Title match against Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio. Earlier in the night, MNM vandalised Eddie Guerrero's lowrider, which is how the match came about. With some help from Melina, who jumped on Guerrero to distract the referee while MNM double-teamed Mysterio, Mercury and Nitro won the match and began their first WWE Tag Team Championship reign.

MNM then began a feud with Hardcore Holly and Charlie Haas. On the June 2, 2005 edition of Smackdown!, MNM faced Holly and Haas in a tag team title match with the winner being whichever team could gain the most falls in 15 minutes. Holly seemed poised to tie the match at 2 falls apiece until Melina got involved, preventing Holly from covering Mercury, and caused just enough of a delay for time to run out.

On the June 16, 2005 edition of Smackdown! MNM interrupted Heidenreich’s chocolate party with the other WWE Divas. Melina made fun of Heidenreich, causing Michelle McCool to attack her, and the two divas ended up brawling. At the same time, MNM were able to give Heidenreich a Snapshot. The next week on Smackdown, Joey Mercury went one on one with Heidenreich and used some help from Johnny Nitro to get the victory. After the match, Michelle McCool attacked Melina again and a catfight ensued. The following week, Melina had her first ever wrestling match on Smackdown, against Michelle McCool. Melina used the ropes to win the match and afterwards MNM gave McCool a Snapshot.

On the July 21, 2005 edition of Smackdown, Candice was in the ring with an announcement regarding the Great American Bash, when she was interrupted by Melina. Melina said she was the most beautiful and dominant diva on Smackdown, and proceeded to rip off Candice’s shirt. Torrie Wilson came down to make the save, and tossed Melina out of the ring. It was later announced that Melina would face Torrie in a Bra and Panties match at the Great American Bash, and Candice would be the special guest referee. Melina won the match, but MNM lost the WWE Tag Team Championship to LOD later that night.

On the July 28 Smackdown, Melina announced that MNM had a new publicist to help them fix their image after losing the WWE Tag Team Championship. The publicist was Jillian Hall, a beautiful blonde with a disturbing “blemish” on her left cheek. Jillian secured the cover of the September 2005 Smackdown! Magazine for MNM, and got Melina a match against Torrie Wilson. Melina, using the ropes for leverage, defeated Wilson once again.

The next week on Smackdown! MNM faced Booker T and Chris Benoit in a tag team match. With Booker T in control, Melina interfered, only to be confronted by Sharmell. While Benoit and Nitro were fighting outside the ring, Jillian Hall flew in and took out Sharmell. This distracted Booker T, who was rolled up by Mercury with a little help from the ropes. On the August 18, 2006 edition of Smackdown, Jillian Hall helped Melina and Joey Mercury defeat Booker T and Sharmell in a mixed tag team match. On the September 1 edition of Smackdown! Heidenreich defeated Joey Mercury. After the match, LOD had the meddling Melina set up for the Doomesday Device, but Nitro made the save.

On the September 30 edition of Smackdown! Melina went one on one with Christy Hemme. Before the match, the two divas had an altercation in the parking lot, during which Christy broke Melina’s fingernail. Mercury and Nitro helped Melina win the match. Christy attacked Melina after the match, causing MNM to go after the fiery diva. As Mercury and Nitro set up Christy for a Snapshot, LOD hit the ring to make the save. Later, it was announced that L.O.D. and Christy would meet MNM at No Mercy in an intergender tag team match. The next week on Smackdown, Christy received a Snapshot from MNM under Melina's direction. At No Mercy, LOD and Christy were victorious over MNM after Christy hit the Doomesday Device on Melina for the three count.

On the October 28, 2006 edition of Smackdown!, MNM competed in a fatal fourway tag team match against The Mexicools, William Regal and Paul Burchill, and LOD. MNM won the match and became 2-Time WWE Tag Team Champions. Melina was delighted. On the November 4, 2005 edition of Smackdown!, MNM were in their home turf – Hollywood. They defended their tag team titles against Batista and the late Eddie Guerrero. Melina provided several distractions during the match, until the momentum swung in MNMs favour. When Guerrero brought two foreign objects into the ring, Melina grabbed the hammer that he was about to use on MNM. Later in the match, when Guerrero set up for the frogsplash on Mercury, Melina jumped in the way, handing Merucry brass knuckles in the process. Guerrero hit the frog splash on Melina, but was then hit with brass knuckles from Mercury, who rolled him up for the win. The following week, Melina hit the ring accompanied by MNM, and introduced America’s Next Top Model contestant, Michelle Deighton. Melina insulted Deighton, causing the model to slap her. Melina then attacked Deighton and MNM prepared for a Snapshot until the Mexicools made the save.

On the special RAW Eddie Guerrero Tribute Show, Melina accompanied MNM to the ring for their match against World Tag Team Champions Kane and The Big Show. Melina tried to get ivolved during the match, but received a kiss from Big Show for her efforts. Later that night Melina competed in an interpromotional diva battle royal, which she won, last eliminating then-Women’s Champion Trish Stratus.

On the November 21, 2006 edition of RAW in England, Melina had MNM kidnap Trish Stratus from ringside as the WWE Women's Champion watched Mickie James take on Candice. As Trish was gagged and tied to a chair backstage, Melina challenged her to a Women’s Title match at Survivor Series. When Trish accepted, Melina nailed her with a vicious kick to the head and MNM left Trish tied up on the floor. A few days later on Smackdown, Melina defeated Christy Hemme with a brutal facebuster--her new finishing move. The Women's Title match at Survivor Series, a match proclaimed the divas match of the year by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, was won by Trish Stratus after the interference of Mickie James.

The next week on Smackdown, Melina visited Batista in the locker room. She seductively suggested that she could make it worth Batista’s while to skip his SmackDown match and allow MNM time to prepare for their match against the Mexicools at Armageddon. Batista seemed very receptive, engaging Melina in a passionate kiss and embrace — for starters. But ultimately, Batista simply thanked Melina for the “warmup” and then headed out for his match. A furious Melina got involved in the match many times, and the fans chanted “Slut” at her as she watched from ringside. At one point, Melina and Mercury were both caught with a 619 from Rey Mysterio. Batista and Mysterio won the match and became the new WWE Tag Team Champions. At Armageddon, the match between MNM and the Mexicools went ahead despite no gold being on the line. Before the match, Psicosis and Super Crazy found Melina backstage and offered to cancel the match if Melina took care of them the same way she took care of Batista on Smackdown. Melina refused, and helped MNM win the match later in the night. On the last Smackdown of 2005, MNM had their title rematch against Batista and Rey Mysterio. Before the match, Melina, accompanied by a lawyer, held a press conference in the ring. She claimed that Batista had sexually harrassed her two weeks ago, and accused Batista of using his power as a champion to get whatever he wants. During the tag team match, Mark Henry (making his WWE return) stormed the ring and attacked Batista with the referee down, and MNM was able to win the match and their third WWE Tag Team Championship.

2006

On the first Smackdown of 2005, Melina announced that Mark Henry was there for her personal protection against Batista. Later that night, Henry helped MNM defeat Mysterio and Batista in a tag team Steel Cage match. On the January 27, 2006 edition of Smackdown, MNM faced Kurt Angle in a Champions vs. Champion match. MNM lost the match and Melina ended up receiving an Ankle Lock from Angle for her meddling. The following week, MNM went up against the Mexicools. When Super Crazy went to the top rope for a Moonsault, Melina (who supposedly had a sprained ankle) ran along the apron and clocked him with her boot, setting MNM up for the win.

At No Way Out, MNM lost to Matt Hardy and Tatanka in a non-title match. A few days later on Smackdown, the titles were on the line. As Matt Hardy went for a Twist of Fate on Mercury, Melina rolled into the ring and grabbed his leg. This provided enough of a distraction for Mercury to roll up Hardy with a handful of tights for the win.

On the March 17 edition of Smackdown, MNM and Mark Henry faced Kurt Angle, Rey Mysterio, and Randy Orton. MNM’s team came up short, despite help from both Melina and Daivari. At Wrestlemania 22, Melina accompanied William Perry into the arena for the 2006 Hall of Fame ceremony.

On April 7, Paul London and Brian Kendrick defeated MNM in a non-title match. As Melina was making her signature entrance before the match, she was pulled off the apron by London and Kendrick in the middle of her split. Later on, Melina got some revenge by pushing London off the top rope. The following week, Brian Kendrick defeated Johnny Nitro in singles action. During the match, Kendrick was sent to the outside and Melina gave him a vicious slap across the face for interupting her entrance last week. Since then, MNM have had two more losses to London and Kendrick, and it looks like a championship opportunity will be in the near future for the duo.

On the April 28, 2006 edition of Smackdown, Melina got into a catfight with Jillian Hall backstage after Melina made fun of her for being fired by JBL. Jillian smudged makeup all over Melina’s face and Melina poured powder all over Jillian. Makeup went everywhere as the two divas brawled before Mercury and Nitro pulled them apart. Many believe this will lead to a match at Judgement Day between the two Divas, in which indeed will take place.
