Admiral James S. Freeman
James Shepherd Freeman was a war hero and son of the famous Alabama millionaire James Stanley Freeman ("Jim" Freeman). Achieved notoriety in his own right during World War II when as commander of the U.S.S. Alchiba, he saved his ship, crew and necessary supplies from a Japanese submarine attack. The vessel was on its way to bring supplies and ammunition to marines stationed in Guadalcanal when it was struck by two torpedoes from a Japanese sub. After ordering the ship's engines to full throttle, Freeman ran the Alchiba onto a beach, saving the lives of the crewmen and preserving the much-needed ammunition aboard. He received the Navy Cross for his actions, and was later promoted to the position of Admiral.
