The Westerschelde in the southwestern Netherlands, is an estuary of the Scheldt river. It is an important shipping route to Antwerp, Belgium.

Currently there are car ferries between Flushing and Breskens (mun. Oostburg), and between Kruiningen (mun. Reimerswaal) and Perkpolder (mun. Hontenisse) .

Mid-March, 2003, a tunnel under the Westerschelde will be opened, the Westerscheldetunnel, from Ellewoutsdijk (mun. Borsele) to Terneuzen. It is not accessible for pedestrians or cyclists, but there will be a bus service, possibly with a trailer for bicycles. The ferry between Flushing and Breskens will then be accessible for pedestrians and cyclists only, the ferry Kruiningen-Perkpolder will be discontinued.
