Bitty Mohanty, also called Bitihotra Mohanty is a high profile[1] criminal sentanced to seven years' imprisonment for raping a German tourist at Alwar, India and he is since absconding (as of 2012) after he was released on a perole on 20 November 2006 to meet his ailing mother.[2][3] The perole was granted within 8 months of his conviction.[3] His father, Bidya Bhushan Mohanty, a Indian Police Service officer, stood as a surety for his son's 15 days' perole, was suspended, arrested, punished and suspended from his service on the charges of helping, hiding and harbouring his son.[2][3] He was later reinstated in the service and retired in 2012.[4] Six years after his son's disappearance, his father expressed ignorance about his son's whereabouts and asserted that his son did not commit any major crime.[3]
A.S.Gill, the DGP of Rajastan and B.B.Mohanty were batch mates and it was alleged that the investigation in the case was slowed down due to intervention of high ranking officials.[4] Investigating officer of perol jump case was transferred abruptly on 29 May 2007 and this hampered speedy investigation.[4]
Evading law
He was charged with raping of a German national on 21 March 2006 and convicted on 12 April 2006 by a fast track court and police from Orissa and Rajastan have failed to locate him.[4] Chief of Minister of Rajastan assured that police are trying to trace Bitty Mohanty by forming special teams, as he is considered a high profile convict.[1] But, after seven years' of convict's disappearance, Rajastan government washed its hands saying that it has done all possible efforts to arrest Bitty Mohanty.[5]
