New Super Mario Bros. is a new side-scrolling platform game developed by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS. It was first shown during the 2004 Electronic Entertainment Expo.[1] The North American release was released on May 15, 2006.[2] Interestingly enough, the Japanese release date was set for the later date of May 25th.[3]
Current information
- The plotline reveals that Bowser Jr. has kidnapped Princess Peach, leaving it up to Mario to rescue her once again.
- The Nintendo Power issue #203 confirmed that the game features over 80 levels. There will also be multiple paths through the levels (like Super Mario World).
- There are eight worlds in total: Plains, Desert, Tropical Island, Forest, Ice, Mountains, Sky and Bowser's Lair.
- Mario, Luigi and the enemy characters exist as real-time 3D models, while the backgrounds are represented with 2D sprites.
- Information on the three new power-ups: The Blue Shell item gives the player the capability of riding in it. Collecting a giant Super Mushroom allows Mario to grow to enormous proportions for a limited amount of time (this feature appeared previosly in Paper Mario 2 were Bowser could obtain a similer effect in a SMB based minigame by colleting a large amount of meat). There is also a blue mushroom that allows Mario to shrink.
- The game action takes place on the top screen, even the underground levels. The only exception are the underground bonus rooms, which are usually only filled with coins and powerups. Other than that, the bottom screen will only be used for gameplay information and storing powerups.
- Mario and Luigi can use the Fire Flower, which will transform them into Fire Mario or Fire Luigi.
- It has been revealed that you can fly, but you need to use a fireball on a Lakitu and jump into the cloud. No regular items allow Mario or Luigi to fly.
- The game supports two players, so one person can take control of Luigi, and both players can work together, or race to the finish. Sometimes they have to compete with each other to reach the goal, and sometimes they can fight against each other.
- When the player acquires a second power-up item, they can store it and it will be displayed on the bottom of the touch screen. The player can then touch this item on the touch screen and it will drop down to the character.
- Moves from more recent games, like the ground pound from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and the wall jump from Super Mario 64, can be used by Mario and Luigi.
- Enemies from Super Mario 64 like Sushi the Shark, Whomps and Super Mario Bros. 3 enemies like Dry Bones are also present in this game.
- Mario and Luigi can grab loose Koopa Shells and put them on to grant different powers. One of these powers is the ability to spin on the back of a shell, like the koopas in Super Mario World.
- The flagpole at the end of each stage in the original Super Mario Bros. game returns to mark the end of the stages, and when achieving a certain score, the player is again rewarded with fireworks. Flagpoles will not be at the end of tower and castle levels. Also, grabbing the very top knob (or jumping over it at the loss of any points) will award the player a 1up. The small castles are also seen at the end of each stage.
- According to Nintendo Power issue #202, Yoshi will not appear, at least in standard gameplay, as he wouldn't fit with the classic Super Mario Bros. formula.
- A recent scan shows a large coin with a star on it, which is confirmed by Nintendo Power to be the star-like collectible. There will be three per stage. According to issue #204, collecting these coins will unlock new paths and item houses on the world map.
- Some of the minigames found in Super Mario 64 DS will be included in the game. 2-player and 4-player single-card multiplayer modes have been also added to all of the minigames.
- The game will have a similar structure to Super Mario Bros. 3 with worlds, levels, fortresses, bosses, warp pipes and walking over the top of the screen. There will also be Hammer Bros. roaming the map.
- According to 'The Pulse' section of Nintendo Power issue #204, The Koopalings (AKA the original 7 Koopa Kids) are officially NOT in this game. It was believed that it was a misunderstanding from Nintendo Power issue #202.
- IGN released footage on May 4th that showed a boss battle between Mario and Bowser. The concept was basically the same as Super Mario Bros' boss battles and the music was a rearrangement of the Super Mario Brothers 3 boss music. Another point of note was the fact that when Bowser was defeated, he writhed in the lava below him, losing his skin the second time he surfaced. It has been speculated that since the Bowsers in worlds 1-7 of Super Mario Bros. are fake, this may not be the real Bowser either; and that he may return as a "Dry Bones" variant Bowser later in the game.
- Luigi can be selected by pressing L+R+A at the file select screen. This was confirmed by reviewers who already own the game. After completing the game, you are told of this. However, the code still works before the game is completed.
- It has an item drop slot on the bottom screen simalar to the one in Super Mario World.
Mini Games
Here is a list of known single player mini games with vague descriptions on how the game play works in these mini games. Some of the mini games have been used from Super Mario 64 DS. The games are split into four categories. Action, Puzzle, Table and Variety
Action
- Snowball Slalom: Rub the touch screen to roll the snowman's head to the goal before time runs out! Rocks will slow you down so avoid them.
- Lakitu Launch: Shoot as many spines as you can into the flying shells within the alloted time.
- Danger, Bob-omb! Danger!: Slide over the Touch Screen to guide the Bob-omb out of the way of the incoming fireballs. Watch out for Bowser's flame breath too. How long can you survive?
- Whack-a-Monty: Whack Monty Mole whenever he pops out of a hole! WHACKITY WHACK!!! You'll lose points if you hit poor luigi by mistake. Be Careful! How many Monty Moles can you whack?
- Balloon Racing: Blow into the Mic to send Yoshi flying skyward. Yoshi's balloons will burst if he hits a Shy Guy. If all the balloons pop, Yoshi will fall. Can you reach the goal before time runs out?
Puzzle
- Wanted!: It's easy to get lost in a crowd! Find the one who disappeared and touch him. There he is!
- Which Wiggler?: Touch the Wiggler on the Touch Screen that matches the one on the top screen. Choose carefully, though; he has a terrible temper.
- Hide and Boo Seek: Rub the touch screen where the Boos are hiding! Can you find them all before the time runs out?
- Puzzle Panel: Match the Touch Screen picture to the top screen. Touch a panel to turn over the surrounding panels. Harder levels will take more turns to solve.
- Coincentration: Pay attention to where the falling land. Tap the blocks to retrieve the coins. Choose wisely: if you pick the wrong block, your game will end.
Table
- Memory Match: Pick two matching cards to make them disappear. Clear all the cards to win. If you make three mistakes, Luigi wins.
- Picture Poker: Get a better hand than Luigi to win! If you're confident that your hand's the best, increase the number of coins you bet!
- Pair-a-Gone: Match up cards horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to remove them from the table. Clear all the cards to win!
Variety
- Mario's Slides: Guide Mario down the slides to the Star. Draw lines on the Touch Screen to create new routes for him. If Mario lands in a Piranha Plant, it's game over! Collect five Stars to move up a stage.
- Sort or 'Splode: Guide black Bob-ombs to the black carpet and red Bob-ombs to the red carpet. If you bring in the wrong Bob-omb, it will explode, and that's no good
- Bounce and Trounce: The sky is thick with Fly Guys! Help Mario stomp on their heads by tapping on him. Tap Mario on the left, right, or center to make him bounce left, right, or straight up into the air.
- Bob-omb Squad: The parachuting Bob-ombs have targeted your precious garden! Use your slingshot to knock them out of the air. Hit Lakitu to blow them all up at once!
- Trampoline Time: Draw a Line on the Touch Screen to create a trampoline. You can draw up to three lines at a time. Use the trampolines to bounce Mario to safety!
