Our Day Out is a 1978 made-for-TV film about deprived children from Liverpool in the United Kingdom. With the exception of Digga and Reilly, who are older, all the children are in the 'Progress Class', a remedial class for illiterate children which is run by Mrs. Kay. Mrs. Kay and her helpers, Susan and Colin, are all very kindly, but have little hope for the children. Another character, Mr. Briggs (whose job is never specified, but it is likely that he is a senior teacher), is a stark contrast to Mrs. Kay, thinking that the children are spoilt and that they don't work hard enough.
The play centers around a Progress Class school trip. Although originally they intend to go to Conway Castle, they end up also going to the zoo, beach and fairground. At first the play seems rather predictable, but by the end it becomes quite dark and unexpected.
Origins
The play "Our Day Out" was written as a BBC Play For Today in 1976. It was adapted for stage and first performed at the Everyman Theatre, Liverpool in 1983.
