Centro Escolar University is one of the most stable educational institutions in the Philippines. Known as one of the pioneers of women education in the Philippines, founded on June 3, 1907 by two women, Librada Avelino and Carmen de Luna, it is originally called as Centro Escolar de Señoritas. It became a university in 1939. Today, the university has three campuses, the Mendiola Campus at Mendiola Street in Manila, the Malolos Campus established in 1978, is in the northern suburb of Malolos City in Bulacan province and the newly established Makati Campus in 2005, is in the Makati Central Business District. Originally, its Parañaque Campus was part of the university's system until it was phased out in the early 1990s.

The university caters the instruction and training of the Filipino youth in the branches of arts, humanities, sciences, and allied medicine. CEU is also known for its Dentistry and Pharmacy graduates because of its high standards of instructions on that field. All of its academic programs are accredited Levels 2 and 3 by the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines. CEU is the first university in the Philippines to be given an ISO:9001 certification on its campuses, attaining higher standards of service it caters to its students. The university was also granted the status of full-autonomy by the Commission on Higher Education. On 2007, the university will celebrate its centennial year.

Schools, Colleges and Academic Programs

Integrated School (1907-2003)

The original academic program of the university, its elementary and high school programs opened in 1907 served thousands of students until it was phased out in its Mendiola Campus in the mid-1990s and formally phased out in 2003 in its Malolos campus. The last batch of its elementary and high school students were from its Malolos Campus in 2003 and 2001 respectively.

Pharmacy (1921)

The first tertiary academic program of the university is the bachelor's degree in Pharmacy. Today the college is known as the School of Pharmacy, also known for its top-notch board passers in the field of Pharmacy in the country. It currently offers bachelor's, masteral and doctoral degrees in Pharmacy. The school is one of the founding members of the Philippine Association of the Colleges of Pharmacy and the Asian Association of Schools of Pharmacy.

Liberal Arts (1922), Education (1923), Music (1907) and Social Work

The School of Education, Liberal Arts, Music and Social Work (SELAMS) merged in the late 1990s to integrate the four major departments of the university. CEU also maintain a great tradition of nurturing the youth through its education programs. The Education Department offers Bachelor's degrees in Secondary and Elementary Education with nine majors. The Liberal Arts department offers degrees in Mass Communication, Language Arts, Economics and Political Science. The school offers great approach to its courses specially centered on humanities and social sciences. The Conservatory of Music offers Bachelor of Music degrees in seven majors namely Music Education and Applied Music in Composition, Conducting, Guitar or String, Piano, Voice, and Wind instruments. Meanwhile the school's Social Work department offers bachelor's degree in Social Work.

Dentistry (1924)

The College of Dentistry is currently the largest and the most modern dental school in the Philippines and one of Asia's finest dental schools. The college offers the four-year degree as Doctor of Dental Medicine and two-year non-degree certification as a Dental Technician. The college maintains high standards of education and facilities, proved in high rankings and percentages of board examination passers in the field of Dentistry in the Philippines.

Optometry (1927)

The College of Optometry maintains its premiership in the Philippine Optometry education as it continues to set trends in its curriculum, facilities and faculty development. It is one of the most modern and complete optometry schools in the Far East. The college offers a four year degree of Doctor of Optometry.

Science (1928)

Established in 1928, the School of Science offers bachelor's and masteral degrees in Biology, Psychology and Cosmetic Science. It is the first school in the Philippines to offer a degree in Cosmetology. While it offers masteral degrees in Psychology, Guidance, Mathematics and Science Educations.

Nutrition (1958), Home Economics (1967), Tourism (1989)

The School of Tourism, Family Economics and Nutrition (STourFEN), pioneered the first College of Foods and Nutrition in the Philippines in 1958, the school now offers bachelors degrees in Tourism, Family or Home Economics and Nutrition and Dietetics. The school also offers bachelors degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management.

Medical Technology

The College of Medical Technology offers bachelors degree in Medical Technology. It is the first school in the Philippines to integrate the Emergency Medical Technician in its curriculum. The school is also the first and only school in the Philippines to be accredited as a Drug-Testing facility.

Nursing (1975)

Founded in 1975, the College of Nursing offers bachelors and masteral degrees in Nursing.

Accountancy, Management and Technology

The School of Accountancy, Management and Technology is the largest college in terms of student population in the university system. It offers bachelors degrees in Accountancy, Business Administration, E-Commerce Technology, Secretarial Administration, Computer Science and Information Systems, Management Engineering and Computer Engineering.

Graduate School (1926)

Established in 1926 under the leadership of Dr. Concepcion Aguila as its first dean, the Graduate School has produced world-class and well-trained professionals since then. Today, the school offers masteral and doctoral programs in the fields of Education, Liberal Arts, Business Administration, Sciences, Philosophy, Pharmacy, Dental Education, and Public Administration. CEU is the first non-sectarian university in the nation to offer graduate studies leading to the degrees Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Education and the only school in the Philippines that offers a post-doctoral degree on Total Quality Management on Higher Education.

Campuses

Mendiola Campus

Consists of 12 buildings that houses an approximately 21,000 students a year. Known for its pink buildings, the campus is located in the western side of the infamous Mendiola Street in Manila, the heart of Manila's famed University-Belt. The campus consists of air-conditioned classrooms, laboratories, a gymnasium, a state-of-the-art auditorium, the university library, air-conditioned theater type lecture halls equipped with audio-visual facilities, a quadrangle, cafeteria, cark park and its own post office, bank and bookstore. The administration building is called the Librada Avelino Hall.

Malolos Campus

Built in 1978, the campus is located in a 7 hectare property in the bustling MacArthur Highway in Malolos. The campus is currently consist of 5 buildings and still a lot of space for expansion. The campus consists of classrooms, laboratories, the university library, a mini-hotel called Ada's (named after the nickname of foundress, Librada Avelino) which replicates a 5-star hotel facilities for its Hotel and Restaurant Management students, and a gymnasium called The Centrodome, built to promote sports in the region has a capacity of 5,000 spectators. The administration building is called the Pilar Hidalgo Lim Hall.

Makati Campus

Located in the heart of the Makati Central Business District, CEU's Makati campus is housed in the Security Bank Building in the bustling Ayala Avenue. The campus consists of The campus consists of air-conditioned classrooms, laboratories, a library and lecture halls equipped with audio-visual facilities, and a car park.

Parañaque Campus

CEU's Parañaque campus is now presently defunct, and before it houses the university's Generosa De Leon Integrated School, the University's flagship elementary and high school.

University Publications

The Rose and The Leaf

It is the university's official yearbook of every academic year. The publication of the yearbook started way back during the first graduates of the School of Pharmacy with the graduates of the University's Integrated School.

The Rosebud

It is the official yearbook of the now defunt Integrated School. It was used by the Mendiola, Parañaque (now defunct) and Malolos campuses during when all three campuses have their elementary and high schools.

The Junior Gazette

It is the official newspaper of the now defunct Integrated School. It is published twice a year and features articles and news contributed by elementary and high school students of the University. The last publication of the Junior Gazette was in 2000 at the Malolos Campus.

Ciencia Y Virtud

It is the official newsletter of the University. Named after the University's motto, Ciencia Y Virtud (Knowledge and Virtue). It is published quarterly and features news and articles about the university.

The Clarion

It is the official newsletter of the Centro Escolar University Alumni Foundation, Inc. It is published quarterly and features news and articles containing the university's alumnis and its stories of successes.

The Centennial Collection Series

Since Centro Escolar University will celebrate its centennial year on 2007, the University published a series of coffee-table books regarding the ingenuity and great potentials of Filipino talent and artistry. The Centennial Collection Series consists of 7 books, started in 1997 during the term of CEU President Dr. Lourdes T. Echauz, the university has published 5 of the 7 books as of this year, namely:

  • Filipino Cuisine
  • Rice
  • Bamboo: A Homage To The Filipino Craftsmanship
  • The Philippine Forests
  • Philippine Markets

All are produced to give importance to the Filipino culture as manifested in the use of various natural resources and to pay homage to the nation- builders through colorful testaments to their ingenuity and artistry. The books are published by the university's affiliate company, Centro Escolar University Publishing, Inc.
