Pocahontas Middle School

Pocahontas Middle School is located in Short Pump, VA in Western Henrico County. The school is operated by Henrico County Public Schools and is located at 12000 Three Chopt Road.

Opening in January 2000, Pocahontas initially opened with transfer students from Short Pump Middle School,Harry F. Byrd Middle School,and others. The following year, Pocahontas was already growing in size and continued its goal to become a school of excellence.

Pocahontas's colors are blue and silver and the school mascot is the Hawk.


Faculty

Administration includes Principal Raymond E. Honeycutt, vice principal Mrs. Jacquelyn B. Hunt and administrative intern Mrs. Joi Alexander-Lowery. There are also two librarians, a Resource Officer, and Mr. Derell Lampert a Technology Support Technician.

Academics

Pocahontas's strong academic program is evident of the school's evergrowing successs. In 2005, Pocahontas topped the SOL charts with 95% of students passing in 8th grade Math and Reading categories, the best of county middle schools.

Pocahontas Athletics

The athletic department at Pocahontas wants to ensure that students are able to express their talents. Pocahontas's athletic deparment has grown steadily over the years.

  • The Boy's Basketball team went undefeated in the 2005-2006 season under the coaching of "slowy".

Wrestling -

The Pocahontas Chorus is a major standout and has become a big part of the school's success. It is under the direction of Mr. David Clatterbuck. All of the groups have done very well in statewide competition at Busch Gardens, where they received all superior ratings in 2004. They also won best choir of their competition group, winnning all around honors. There are many different groups in the Pocahontas Chorus.They include:


  1. Chorus 6 is the 6th grade mixed choir and is non-select.
  2. General Chorus is the Pocahontas 7th and 8th grade mixed-choir and is non-select. They perform a number of 4-5 part pieces and some accapella.
  3. Lyrical Ladies is a girls only choir and is a select group of about 25 girls. They perform challenging 4-part harmonies as well as numerous accapella songs.
  4. Hawk Harmony is another select choir. In March 2006, Hawk Harmony put on a Jr. production of the musical "Into the Woods".

Pocahontas Band

The Pocahontas Band has also won many accalades as a result of their accomplishments. It is under the direction of Mr. Matthew Bruins. They have yet to perform in competition in 2006,but will do so in April. (Anthony Palesis stinks at strings never go to a concert with him in it)


Pocahontas Orchestra

When the Pocahontas Orchestra was formed in 2000, it was very small and had to practice with the Harry F. Byrd Middle School orchestra. It has grown over the years and has become a respectable part of Pocahontas's music program.
