Deep Throat appears in seven episodes of The X-Files before being killed, and makes several other appearances later, mostly in flashbacks. His first appearance is in the episode Deep Throat, where he apparently tries to help Agent Mulder.

Deep Throat has provided Mulder and Dana Scully with information there would be otherwise unable to obtain, leading to some interesting investigations, but he divulged information whenever and however he wanted. Sometimes agent Mulder failed to get specific information from Deep Throat.

It is unclear what were the motives of Deep Throat's desire to help Mulder uncover the truth about extraterrestrial life. Deep Throat himself has stated that helping Mulder is his way of clearing his own conscience after having killed an alien. It seems that Deep Throat believes that truth should be known, but some truths should still be hidden.

Deep Throat's exact contacts and influence also remained unclear, although it was made obvious that the man has wide powers and can even influence the decisions within the FBI. Deep Throat was shot in the finale of X-Files season 1, The Erlenmeyer Flask.
