Multi-channel network
YouTube Multi Channel Networks are organisations that "affiliate with multiple YouTube channels, often to offer assistance in areas such as product, programming, funding, cross-promotion, partner management, digital rights management, monetization/sales, and/or audience development." [1]
They are also known as Online Video Studios, MCNs, OVSs, YouTube Networks or simply Networks. [2]
Worth of Multi Channel Networks
Partnering with a YouTube network has been discussed by several high profile YouTube creators, including Hank Green[3] and Freddy Wong.[4] The benefits of partnering with a YouTube network can include access to production and editing facilities[5], higher CPM[6] and access to music libraries.[7][8][9]
Criticism
There have been several controversies involving YouTube Networks.
Maker Studios formerly produced Ray William Johnson's Equals Three and Your Favorite Martian.[10] In October 2012, Johnson announced he would be leaving Maker Studios in an episode of Equals Three.[11][12] Johnson had also formed his own production studio, Runaway Planet.[13][14] Ray William Johnson has stated online that he left Maker Studios due to the pressure the company put on him into signing a contract which gives Maker a 40% share of his channel's AdSense revenue and 50% of his show's intellectual property rights. Johnson stated that they were using "thuggish tactics" to pressure him into signing the contract, one of which was allegedly leveraging his AdSense account for the intellectual property rights to YourFavoriteMartian. Johnson also claimed that Maker Studios CEO, Danny Zappin, is a convicted felon, a charge which Zappin later publicly admitted to.[15][16][17][18]
Machinima has been criticised for the use of perpetual contracts.[19] Ben Vacas, known to the YouTube community as 'Braindeadly', attracted media attention in January 2013 over contractual issues with Machinima.[20] Under the terms of his contract, Machinima were permitted to place advertisements on Vacas's videos and in return he would receive a percentage of the profits generated.[20] However, the contract also disclosed that it existed "in perpetuity";[19] meaning Machinima would hold the rights to any content created by Vacas published on his partnered youtube channel in his lifetime, a detail Vacas failed to read.[19]
