Marsannay-la-Côte is a French commune, situated in the département of Côte-d'Or, in the région of Bourgogne (Burgundy).
Geography
Marsannay-la-Côte contains a strip of vineyards on the slope of the Côte d'Or. The vineyards are the most northerly part of the Burgundy wine region. In the plain of the Saône to the east, large fields are visible. The original village is now flanked by small modern housing developments. There is 186ha of vineyards, 202ha of agricultural land and 523ha of communal woodland on the Jurassic limestone hills to the West.
The village is situated 6km South-East of Dijon and is on the Route des Grand Crus - the "wine road" that traverses the Burgundy wine region.
Wine making
Marsannay-la-Côte has the privileged wine appellation of first class in the Côte de Nuits, and is notable for producing wines of all three colours - red, white and rosé - which is unique in the Burgundy region.
Pinot Noir is the only varietal used for the production of red and rosé wines. Chardonnay is used for the Marsannay whites.
The red wines have intense colour and a bouquet with hints ofwild blackberries, dried plums and blackcurrant. They have some tannin but also have good suppleness. With ageing they also develop musky elegance.
The rosés are tender and fruity and have good strength and a bouquet which evokes freshly crushed grapes and peaches.
Marsannay whites have a golden colour and a good "nose" with hints of banana, pineapple and citronella. These wines are supple, full and fleshy and they have remarkable length in the mouth.
Vineyards
The vineyards are both southern and eastern facing, on gentle slopes at altitudes of between 260 and 320 metres. The soils are dark brown, dry and of chalky-marl-clay composition but with pebbles and gravel which provides good natural drainage.
