Ortari mountain

The mountain of Ortari is located within walking distance to the northwest of the city of Kimi on the island of Evia. The northern sides forms a spectacular geological terrain, with nearly vertical slopes, leading impressively in the Aegean Sea. The dense vegetation is just reaching the sea! At some points on the finish of the cliffs, are formed great small beaches. The highest peak has an altitude of 876m and is located just above the thalassa. That makes that peak the highest peak above the sea of all the Europe.The days that the weather is lucid and visible, especially in the winter, visitors are able to see over a distance of 100 nautical miles, many Aegean islands, as the Sporades, Limnos , Ai Stratis island, Chios, Andros and Tinos. Foxes, wild goats, wild sheep, ferrets, weasels, squirrels, hares, hedgehogs and a large number of reptiles that have their habitat Ortari. The avifauna is excellent and rare, recorded with nearly 100 different bird species. Eagles, buzzards, hawks and many other birds of prey nest here while older vultures and buzzards, they built their nests on the steep slopes of the mountain. The vultures were poisoned because they lost, but fortunately, in the last five years began to reappear.   Access to the top of the slope-cliff of 876 meters is easy from the south side of the mountain, and there is a dirt road approaching one kilometer from the top. After a visual estimate and walking 30 minutes you are in the highest and extremely beautiful slope-cliff of Europe over marine environment.   The mountain has deteriorated in recent years by illegal and "legal" logging from overgrazing, illegal poisons and risks this amazing mountain of placing viomichnikon wind farms (wind turbines).
